SAM SAMPSON

McCALLSURG--Funeral services were held for Sam Sampson of the Radcliffe community Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. from the Zion Lutheran church, northeast of McCallsburg, following a prayer service, the Rev. P. R. Heller of McCallsburg in charge. The Rev. A. E. Nelson, pastor of the Bergen Lutheran church of Roland, gave a short message.

A mixed quartette sang "God's Way," and "Some Day We'll Understand."

Casket bearers were nephews, Harold and Earl Sampson of Austin, Minn., John and James Jacobson and Luther Holland of McCallsburg and Stanford Matchie of Ackley. There were many floral gifts and memorial offerings. Burial was in the Zion church cemetery.

Life Sketch

Sam Sampson, son of John and Enger Sampson, was born July 6, 1886 on a farm 4 miles south of Radcliffe and died Nov. 12, 1957 at the age of 71 years, 4 month and 6 days.

He was baptized and confirmed in the East Bergen church by the Rev. Smedal and remained a member of that church until 1955 when he transferred his membership to the Zion Lutheran church.

In 1910 he was united in marriage to Marguerite Helvig. They lived in Ipswich, S. D., three years and one year in Colorado, because of his wife's health.

To this union one daughter was born, Florence, Mrs. Gabe Edland. They returned to Iowa 1914, his wife died the same year. The daughter Florence went to make her home with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Sampson.

In 1916 he married Nettie Jacobson of Roland. They moved to a farm near Utica, Minn., where she died in 1919. He returned to a farm two miles south of Radcliffe where she lived several years, the last years were spent on the home place.

He was caretaker of Zion church 16 years and also sexton of the Zion and Garden City cemeteries.

On Dec. 16, 1955 he suffered a light stroke on Sept. 7, 1957 he entered the Story City Hospital and later was transferred to the Webster City Hospital where he underwent surgery. The surgery seemed to be successful and he returned home but due to complications he gradually grew weaker and died Nov. 12.

He was preceded in death by his wife Marguerite and wife Nettie, his parents, one sister, Anna Miler and three brothers, Chris, Joe and Silas.

Surviving are the daughter, Mrs. Gabe (Florence) Edland, two grandsons, Gary and Earl Edland of Grand Meadows, Minn., a brother, Johnny of Austin, Minn., two sisters, Mrs. Inga Jacobson of McCallsburg and Mrs. Sadie Pickett of Radcliffe, 10 prayer service at the home with nieces and nephews and 14 grand
