Service Held Saturday For Sanford Thompson

Funeral services for Sanford Thompson were held Saturday afternoon at the Salems Lutheran church in Roland, with Rev. O. Holen in charge, due to the illness of Mr. Thompson's pastor, Rev. H. N. Bakke.

A prayer service was held at 12:30 for the family and relatives. During this service Mrs. G. E. Dubois an Mrs. B. A. Imsland sang "The Old Rugged Cross" accompanied by Mrs. Ole Haaland who furnished organ music for the entire service.

The second service was held at 2:30 when Rev. Holen used as his text John 13:7. Mrs. DuBois and Mrs. Imsland sang for this service "Sometime We'll Understand," "Th Lord is May Shepherd" ws sung by Mrs. F. E. Nail. "What a Friend we Have in Jesus" was sung by the congregation.

Casket bearers were Jesse Jorstad, George Merkel, Jeffrey Hougan, Chester Pearson, Ross Morris and George Auestad. Burial was made in the McCallsburg cemetery.

Ray Sanford Thompson, son of Thomas and Josephine Thompson, was born Aug. 18, 1903, on a farm southeast of Roland, and passed away March 27, 1951, at the Memorial hospital in Eldora after an illness of three weeks and three days, following an operation for a ruptured appendix.

He was married in Marshalltown Nov. 6, 1933, to Emma Olson of McCallsburg, and since that time they have made their home in the McCallsburg community; his occupation was ditching contractor.

Surviving are his wife, Emma, and seven children, Marcia and Marilyn 16, Stanley 15, Loretta 12, Sterling 8, Terry 7 and Raylene 3. One daughter preceded him in death in 1941.

Also surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Thompson of Roland and nine brothers and sisters, Julius, Maurice, Frances, Judith (Mrs. Oscar Chelsvig of Roland), Earl of McCallsburg, Herman of Ottumwa, Myrtle, (Mrs. Clifton Harrendorf of State Center), Lillian (Mrs. Earl Bernard of State Center), Berniece, (Mrs. Oren Meyer of Marshalltown). All were present for the funeral.

Mr. Thompson was baptized in the Salem Lutheran church in Roland by the Rev. J. N. Sandvin and confirmed in the Bethany Lutheran church in McCallsburg.

There were several gifts of money to the family, to the church building fund and to missions, as well as many lovely floral offerings.

It was a largely attended funeral, the church filled to overflowing. Relatives and friends were present from Evansville, Ind., Blue Earth, Minn., Austin, Minn., Garner, Des Moines, Thompson, Glenville, Minn., and many surrounding towns.
