THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, October 19, 1899, page 1. "AN OLD SETTLER GONE. George Garlock Passed Away Last Wednesday Afternoon. - George Garlock, a resident near Maxwell since the spring of 1867, died at his home, six and one-half miles southwest of Maxwell, on the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 11, 1899, aged 73 years, 2 months and 7 days. The deceased was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, Aug. 4, 1826, and was the eldest son of a family of nine children, five boys and four girls. In March, 1851, he, having decided that the opportunities of the new world were greater and better than those of the old, came to America, and settled in Ohio, where he resided until he came to Story county, in March 1867. On Oct. 4, 1851, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Haller, of Ohio, who has since been his helpmeet and companion, and who survives her husband. Mr. Garlock was the father of eleven children, two of whom preceded him to the land beyond, and there waited to greet the loved ones left behind, the father being the first to answer to the final summons. Nine children are left to mourn the loss of an indulgent and loving father. Mr. Garlock was one of our best known and highly respected citizens, his kindness of heart and general amiability making him a universal favorite where ever he was known. His exemplary, Christian life, endeared him to every one with whom he came in contact, and his demise leaves an aching void in many a heart outside of his own household. For years the deceased has been a great sufferer from a fever sore, and so excruciating had become the suffering from this affliction that on Sept. 4th, after being advised of the probable result of amputation of the affected limb, he decided to have it done, and was temporarily relieved from his intense suffering, but was unable, owing to age and infirmity to survive the ordeal, and succumbed to the irritating influences of the disease. Funeral services were held at Mr. Zion church on Friday of last week , words of consolation being spoken by Rev. J. F. Yerger, Presiding Elder of the Evangelical church and a former pastor…"
