THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, April 4, 1929, page 1, column 1. "MAXWELL FINANCIER DIES IN CALIFORNIA. - Henry J. Garlock Passed Away Last Thursday at McLain Home in Pasadena. Funeral Here. Henry J. Garlock, 68, for over sixty years a resident of this vicinity and for thirty-four years identified with the banking interests of Maxwell, died at Pasadena, Calif., Thursday of last week and was buried Wednesday from the Presbyterian church here. Mr. Garlock had been ailing for several years and in company with his wife went to California about two months ago, where, it was hoped, he would recuperate, but he was taken seriously ill on the eve of his intended departure for Iowa and passed away the following day. Henry Garlock was a man of keen business judgment and foresight and his administration of the affairs of the banking institution of which he was cashier for so many years was responsible, in a large measure for its stability which enabled it to weather the financial storms and depression of recent years. To eulogize Henry Garlock would be a comparatively easy matter for he had the qualities and the record to justify it; but it would not be his wish. His record and life as a man, a friend, a citizen, a husband and father constitutes a eulogy in itself beyond the power of words to improve upon. Henry J. Garlock was born on January 11, 1861, near Canfield, Mahoning county, Ohio. In 1867 he came with his parents, George and Mary Garlock, to Iowa, where the family settled on what has since been known as the old Garlock homestead, five miles southwest of Maxwell. He had four brothers, John, David, Joseph and William; and four sisters, Katherine, Amelia, Anna and Alice. The father and mother and two brothers, John and David, preceded him in death. His early years were spent on the farm and as __ ___ __. In young manhood he attended the Maxwell schools and Drake University. There then followed several years of teaching, during which he was principal of the schools at Slater, Iowa Center and Collins. He was married, June 13, 1895, to Katherine Hall. There were three sons, Fred, Richard and Robert. His wife, the sons, a daughter-in-law, Marie, and a grandson, Frederick, survive him. He was a member of Herald Lodge, No. 450, A. F. & A. M., and of the local camp, M. W. A. In about 1890 he entered the banking business. Starting as assistant in the private Bank of Maxwell, owned by Mr. Clark McLain, now of Pasadena, Cal., he became cashier, when in 1898 this bank was merged with the Security Bank and the consolidated institution was incorporated as the State Bank of Maxwell. This position he held until 1918 when he was made vice-president. The following year he succeeded to the presidency. In 1924, having disposed of his stock, his connection with the bank was terminated. In 1922 he became an inspector for the Bankers Life Insurance Company of Des Moines. After that date his work with the State Bank of Maxwell was largely of an advisory character. He was actively engaged as inspector until a few months preceding his death. These months were spent among relatives and friends in California. Realization of his cherished desire to be again with these friends and former associates made this one of the happiest periods of his life. The end came suddenly, on March 28, 1929, at the home of his lifelong friends, Mr. and Mrs. Clark McLain. His wife was the only member of his immediate family with him during the last moments; but the solicitude and kind ministrations of his many friends anticipated every need. Mrs. Garlock was accompanied home by her nephew, Mr. Manford Woods, and his family. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Presbyterian church here of which deceased had been a member for the past seventeen years. The sermon was by the pastor, Rev. B. H. Guthrie, assisted by Rev. W. S. Kight, pastor of the M. E. church. The local Masonic lodge conducted the burial service of the fraternity at the grave."
