Rites Held For Mary Dueland

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Dueland were held Monday afternoon at the Riis Funeral home at 1:30 and two o'clock at the Bethlehem Lutheran church here. The Rev. P. E. Onstad officiated.

At the funeral home Pastor Onstad sang "My Faith Looks Up To Thee" accompanied by Homer Lewis at the piano. A short prayer service followed. At the church with Homer Lewis at the organ, Otis Ihle sang "Have Thine Own Way, Lord" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Rev Onstad sang "I Know of a Sleep in Jesus Name."

Pastor Onstad took his text from John 14:27.

The beautiful floral offerings were cared for by Mrs. Lester Nelson, Sr. and Mrs. Phil Rood. There were also many gifts to missions in honor of Mrs. Dueland.

Casket bearers were Ralph Ray, Paul McBride, Ronald Dueland, James Link, Donald Elder and Joe Elder, Jr., all grandsons of Mrs. Dueland.

Interment was in the Slater cemetery.

Obituary

Mrs. B. C. Dueland was born on June 29, 1874 two and one half miles east of Slater on what is known as the Sydnes farm. Her parents were Bertha and Reinert Sydnes.

She died on Thursday, November 19 at the age of 79 years, four months and 29 days.

On November 13, 1896, Mary Sydnes was united in marriage to Ben C. Dueland at the Lutheran church in Huxley. They established their home in Slater at this time. To this union were born six children. They are Mrs. J. L. Elder of Grimes, Raymond of Ottumwa, Mrs. W. B. McBride of Slater, Glendora of Arlington, Va., Carl of Jamaica and Mrs. J. J. Leirn of Oelwein. She is also survived by a brother, John Sydnes of Slater, 18 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Her husband and one great grandchild preceded her in death as well as three sisters and four brothers.

Mrs. Dueland was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church at Slater. At the time of her death she was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran church. From early years she was vitally interested in the spiritual welfare of the church and community and continued this interest until her health failed. During the last two years she has made her home with a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. McBride where every loving car was given her. May God bless her memory.
