Obituary For Mrs. Bertha M. Apland

Mrs. Bertha Marie Apland, 88, 716 5th St., Ames, Iowa, died at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames on Jan. 22, 1964 as a result of falling in her home two days after Christmas and fracturing her left hip.

She was born Nov. 4, 1875 in Polk county on a farm near Slater to Jacob S. and Mari Rugtvedt Urdahl, early Iowa Pioneer settlers. When the family returned in the 1880s they moved to Slater and Bertha Marie and her sister, Anna, ran a dressmaking shop on East Main St. in a building owned by their father.

She was united in marriage in 1895 to Anfin Apland, a son of Oley and Anna Ersland Apland, who settled in Story County in 1855.

To this union was born a daughter, Pearl, now of Indianapolis, Ind., a son, W. LeRoy, who has been living in Ames with his mother and taking care of her; and a daughter, Lola Doris, who passed away in 1929 while a freshman at Iowa State University.

Also surviving her in addition to Pearl and LeRoy, is her sister, Inger (Mrs. David Alleman) of Slater.

Preceding her in death in addition to her daughter, Lola Doris were three sisters: Martha (Mrs. Tom Arendts) of Kensett, Iowa; Anna (Mrs. David Fausch) of Ottawa, Kansas and a sister who died in infancy.

Bertha Marie Apland was the last surviving member of the sons and daughters of Oley and Anna Apland and their wives and husbands.

She was a charger member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater. Her family became charter members while she was in her infancy.

Mrs. Apland lived on farms near Slater, Kelley and Huxley and in the town of Slater, Cambridge and Huxley and in Ames from 1915 until her death.
