Rites Held For David Schroeder
SLATER--David H. Schroeder, 69, retired signal maintainer for the Chicago & Northwestern railroad and Tama carpenter, died of a heart attack at 1 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 1954 at his home 1010 Washington street after a brief illness. He became ill at noon on Sunday. Previously he had been in apparent good health and never been known to suffer from a heart ailment.
David Henry Schroeder, on of eight sons of Henry John Schroeder and Johanna Jipp Schroeder was born March 9, 1884 on a farm in Columbia township, Tama County, Iowa. He attended Columbia No. 5 rural school, known as the Center school. At the age od 16 he moved with his family to Tama.
He was married April 21, 1909 to Agnes Alice Kucrea [should be Kucera] of Tama, the wedding taking place at the home of her mother here. Following his marriage Mr. Schroeder and his wife lived for a year in Tama where he was engaged at the Brownlee Elevator. He then farmed two years at Wessington, S.D.
At the age of 29 he began working for the Chicago and Northwestern railroad as a signal maintainer, making his home at Marshalltown for one year, at Des Moines for a year and then at Slater where he lived for 20 years. He was then stationed at Arion and at Blairstown before returning to Tama 16 years ago in 1938. He retired from the railroad in the Autumn of 1945 having completed 32 years of service. He then began doing carpenter work with his brothers, John, August and Charles Schroeder.
In 1947 Dave Schroeder built a new hours for himself and Mrs. Schroeder on Washington street, facing the gold course. It was the first new home to be built on the newly opened street.
Mr. Schroeder had held all offices in the I.O.O.F. lodge. He was also a member of the Rebekah lodge and the Masonic lodge, at one time he was a member of the Order of Easter Star, and had served as associate patron of the lodge while living at Blairstown. At Slater he had served as a City councilman and was also band leader there for a number of years. As a young man he played cornet with Tama City band and after returning here in 1938 he again played with the band until it was disbanded in favor of the high school band. He was a member of the Tama Methodist church.
Mr. Schroeder is survived by his wife and two daughter, Mrs. Orville (Helen) Chandler of Ottumwa and Mrs. Rex (Joanne) Cobet of east of Tama, also three grandchildren, Karla Kaye Winter who has always made her home with her grandparents, Cherie Lynn Cobet of Tama and David Henry Chandler of Ottumwa. Mr. Schroeder was the last of his family. Preceding him in death besides his parents were seven brothers John, Gus, Charlie, Ralph and Otto of Tama, Will of Lincoln, Nebraska and Ben of Boone, and a sister, Miss Emma Schroeder of Tama.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan 28 at the Harrison Funeral Home in Tama with Rev. Jack Speer officiating.
Ben Jones sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "The Old Rugged Cross" with Mrs. Jones playing the piano accompaniment.
Bearers were Ralph Granger, Willis Perry, Frank Wood, Thomas Griswald, Willard Handyshell and Arnold Vileta.
Tama I.O.O.F. lodge No. 152 was in charge of the service. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery at Tama.
