He grew to manhood and learned the trade of blacksmithing near his boyhood home. Here he was united in marriage to Ida Mary Burgtorf on October, 28, 1898. To this happy union ten children were born, two of whom died in infancy.

He gave his heart to God early in life, uniting with the Methodist church, in which he was a faithful worker as long as his health permitted. During his later years, while unable to attend church services he enjoyed the sermons he heard on the radio He spent much time in prayer and in reading the Bible and was always sincerely concerned with showing his children the right way of life.

When first married Mr. and Mrs. Schulz lived near Endora, Kansas, later moving to Heizer, Kansas. In 1920, the family moved to Calico Rock, Arkansas and in 1935.
