Last Rites Held Friday Morning for Marcus E. Smith
Maxwell, May 12 -- Funeral rites for Marcus E. Smith, 82, were held Friday morning at 10:30 in the Presbyterian church with the Rev. J. D. Brower officiating.
Burial was made in the family lot in the Maxwell cemetery.
A quartette composed of Mrs. H. C. Larsen, Mrs. Ray Gooden, Dale John and Dorus Myers, sang "Jesus Saviour Pilot Me," "The Nearer the Sweeter" and "Asleep in Jesus." Pall bearers were nephews of the deceased, Bryan Smith, Claire Olinger, Ralph Cooper, Vaugh Ray, Bernice and Arnold Scott. Floral tributes were many and very beautiful. Burial was made in the family lot in the Maxwell cemetery. Rev. Brower read in part the following brief life sketch.
Marcus Edward Smith was born in Des Moines, May 31, 1865. He was one of a family of five children born to Robert and Martha Smith. He passed away Tuesday evening in the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines after a short illness. He spent most of his life in Polk and Story counties and followed the trade of a mason.
He was united in marriage to Jennie Olinger, April 2, 1891. To this union was born one daughter who died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were privileged to spend 50 years of happy married life together, having celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary, April 2, 1941. Mrs. Smith passed away, March 26, 1942.
The deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church of Maxwell, serving most of the time in the capacity of elder. Survivors include only a number of nieces and nephews.
