Funeral Services Held at Palestine For Martha Nernes

Cambridge, Jan. 23 -- Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Nernes, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs Millie Bartell of Cambridge, December 23, were held at the Palestine Lutheran church Thursday, December 27, with Rev. H. E. Jacobson, pastor of the church, in charge.

Music was furnished by Elman Sheldahl who sang two numbers, "Rock of Ages" and "Will There Be Any Stars in My Crown." Pallbearers were Henry Larson of Eagle Grove, Ray Larson of Renwick, Harold, S. B., and Osmond Sheldahl of Huxley, and Louie Sheldahl of Madrid.

Interment was in the Palestine cemetery.

Following is a life sketch of the deceased:

"Martha Christine Nernes, daughter of Haldor and Magdalena Sheldahl, was born in Etna, Norway, Aug. 17, 1857, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Millie Bartell, on Dec. 23, 1945, having attained the age of 88 years, four months and six days. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. When she was 12 years of age, she together with her parents, came to America and settled in Story county, Iowa.

"Christina was united in marriage to Thomas Nernes on Dec. 23, 1882, and they started married life together on a farm in the vicinity of Cambridge, Ia. In this locality they resided for a number of years. Later they moved to Windom, Minnesota, where she resided for 30 years. Her husband preceded her in death on March 4, 1918.

"To this union were born nine children, five of whom passed away in infancy, and the four left to cherish her memory are Ole T. Nernes of Nevada, Ia., Mrs. Millie Bartell of Cambridge, Ia., Mrs. Clara Christenson of Middletown, N. Y. and Mrs. Hanna Willaby of Madrid, Ia.

"One sister, Mrs. Margaret Larson of Eagle Grove, Ia., thirteen grandchildren, and one great granddaughter also survive beside a host of relatives and friends."
