Funeral Rites Held at Cambridge for Mrs. Langland

Cambridge, May 3--Funeral rites for Mrs. Ole Langland, 80, who died at the Lutheran Home for the Aged at Madrid on Sunday April 30, were held at the Lutheran church in Cambridge, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, with Rev. Peder Buland in charge. Burial followed in the family lot in the Slater cemetery.

The music was furnished by Mrs. Elsie Webb, Mrs. Arnold Nernes and Mrs. W. E. Jacobson, with Mrs. Arlene Freeland at the organ.

The services were attended by a large group of old time neighbors and friends who had gathered with members of the family to pay a final tribute of love and respect to one whom they had so long known and respected.

Casket bearers were K. E. Nelson, W. R. Johnson, A. N. Dahl, A. N. Freeland, H. C. Cairns and Ole Severeid.

The following brief life sketch of the deceased was read by the pastor during the service:

Albertina Johnson was born near Stockholm, Sweden, on March 6, 1864. As a young child, she came to America with her parents, the family settling at Chariton, Iowa. She and Ole Langland were married on September 7, 1887. The young couple established their home at Des Moines, where they lived until September, 1890, when they moved to Slater, where she actively assisted her husband in publishing the Slater News. January 1, 1903 the family moved to Nevada, where Mr. Langland was County Recorder for four years. The family took up their residence at Cambridge in June, 1906, where Mrs. Langland actively assisted her husband in publishing the Cambridge Leader, the couple retired from the newspaper business July 1, 1938.

The family home continued at Cambridge until September, 1943, when it became necessary, on account of infirmities due to old age, to break up their home. After staying with their children for a few months, they moved to the Lutheran Home for the Aged at Madrid, where Mrs. Langland died on Sunday, April 30, 1944, at the age of eighty years, one month and 24 days.

To Mr. and Mrs. Langland, were born eight children, a daughter dying at birth, the six sons and one daughter being: Harry Langland of Nevada, Dr. Oliver Langland of Holstein, Anne Langland in the employment of the government at San Francisco, Cal., and who was unable to be present for the funeral services, Dr. Raymond Langland of Madrid, Dr. Edwin Langland, Story City, Lafayette Langland, Cambridge, Dr. Leonard Langland who is a first lieutenant in the veterinary corps, in the armed services and located somewhere in India. Mrs. Langland was the last survivor of a family of one brother and four sisters. In addition to her husband, Ole Langland and seven children she is survived by eight grandchildren.

Mrs. Langland was a woman of many fine traits of character. She had an unusual amount of energy and determination. She was very much interested in the welfare and education of her seven children, having encouraged all of them to attend college. Although devoting several days each week during her active life to the newspaper office, she found time to manage her home, take care of a large family, and devote considerable time to the welfare of the community and the church. She was a member of Cambridge Lutheran church for about thirty-eight years, having been particularly active in Ladies' Aid Society.

Thus a family circle is broken; there will be a vacant chair in the gatherings which formed such a prominent part in the life of this family. A host of friends will join the family in cherishing her memory.
