Funeral Services for Bertha Chance Held at Zearing

Zearing, May 3--Mrs. Bertha Chance, second of a family of five children, daughter of Albert and Nancy Swaggart, was born in Hardin county, Iowa, May 3, 1877 and died at the home of daughter, Mrs. Cecil Apple near Colo, on April 22, 1944, at the age of 66 years, 11 months and 19 days.Mrs. Chance was reared in Hardin county, and spent most of her life in the Zearing and St. Anthony communities.
On April 10, 1895 she was married to Tom Chance and to this union were born four children, one son dying in infancy, those living are Mrs. Cleo Apple of Colo; Mrs Tressa Steelman of Hubbard and Delbert Chance of Alliance, Neb. She also leaves two brothers, Herbert Swaggart of Eldora; Henry Swaggart of McCallsburg and two sisters, Mrs. Maude Tight of Marshalltown and Mrs. Ruth Cockerham of Union, there are also 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Chance accepted the Christian faith as a girl and received baptism. She had been in declining health for a number of years, the last year and a half being spent in the home of her daughter, where she had every attention which could add to her ease.
Services were conducted Tuesday, April 15, at the Brouhard Funeral home in Zearing, with Rev. R. E. Kerney, pastor of the Evangelical church in Zearing presiding. Mrs. Orpha Hankins and Mrs. Myrtle Martin sang, with Mrs. Eloise Sterling at the piano. Flowers were cared for by Mrs. Florice Deal and Mrs. Goldie Chance. Casket bearers were Myron Cockerham, Merle Cockerham, Clair Cockerham, Clair Steelman, Troy Chance and Harold Frazier. Burial was in the Zearing cemetery.
