Funeral Services Held For H. W. Marshall

Funeral services for H. W. Marshall long time Slater resident were held Thursday afternoon. A short prayer service was held at the Riis Funeral Home at 1:30 and services at the Methodist Church were at 2 o'clock with Rev. Hoyle in charge. His sermon was on Meditations from the 90th Psalm. Otis Ihle sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "In the Garden" accompanied by Mrs Archie Coyle. There were many beautiful floral offerings which were in charge of Mrs. John Gunderson and Mrs. Freebert Riis. There were also a number of gifts to worthy causes in memory of Mr. Marshall.

There was an honor guard from the Slater American Legion Post No. 260 and the firing squad took part in the services at the cemetery.

Pallbearers were fellow members of the Slater I.O.O.F. Lodge; E. C. Rood, Dr. R. G. Nott, Nels Sabo, Burton Larson, Merle Chader, and Lewis Stensland. Burial ws in the Slater Cemetery.

Obituary

Herbert William Marshall died May 8, 1955 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in McKinney, Texas. He was born at Kellogg, Iowa January 19, 1876, the son of William Marshall and Isora Benson Marshall. He was married to Bessie Rice of Menlo, Iowa on May 22, 1901. She preceded him in death.

Survivors are his three children, Herbert William Marshall, Jr. of Dallas, Texas; Mildred Marshall of Pontiac, Michigan and Ralph Rice Marshall of Chicago, Illinois; three grandchildren, Virginia Lee and Carol May Marshall of Dallas and William Bruce Marshall of Chicago.

He was a veteran of the Spanish American War. He saw active combat duty in the Phillipine Islands. He was an active member of the American Legion, and the Order of Railroad Telegraphers. At the time of his death he was visiting his son Herbert at Dallas, where he became ill and died while being treated at the VA Hospital at McKinney, Texas. Mr. Marshall loved life, loved his friends who were many and who will cherish his memory.
