Funeral Services Wednesday Afternoon for Mrs. Martha Nelson

Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Nelson, 59, who died suddenly at her home, 1032 Lincoln Way, early in the evening of Easter Sunday, were held Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Lutheran church with her pastor, Dr. J. O. Simon, in charge.

A large group of relatives and friends gathered about the flower-banked bier for the service which preceded the long overland trip to Atlantic for the burial.

Harry Christiansen was at the organ during the service and the beautiful floral offerings were cared for by Mrs. Sivrie Kinsey and Mrs. Chris Paulson.

Pallbearers were R. Fred Nelson, Ferd Karges, Glen Stratton, Lowell Johnson, Fred Larsen and Richard Anderson.

Prior to the services, dinner was served by the ladies of the church to the members of the family and those from out of the city who were here for the service. Mrs. R. Fred Nelson was in charge of this committee.

The life sketch of the deceased, as prepared and read by her pastor, follows in part:

"Martha Thiele was born on a farm south of Adair, in Adair county, Jan. 30, 1883, and died at her home in Nevada April 13, 1941, at the age of 58 years, two months and 13 days. She was a daughter of Christian and Mary Thiele, one of four daughters and three sons. Two of her brothers, George and Marcus Thiele, are still alive and reside near the old family homestead where the brothers and sisters were born.

"Martha Thiele was united in marriage to Albert J. Nelson, on Sept. 21, 1904. To this union three children were born, Alvin Nelson of northeast of Nevada, Melvin Nelson, now athletic coach at the schools at Lime Springs, and Genevieve, now Mrs. John Vasko of Battle Creek, Mich.

"For a number of years Mrs. and Mrs. Nelson conducted a shoe store in Nevada and after the death of her husband on April 12, 1917, she continued the business for approximately 10 years.

"Besides the two sons and a daughter, Mrs. Nelson is survived by three grandchildren.

"Mrs. Nelson was a woman of many fine qualities and after the death of her husband, the home might well be called a "haven for refugees." (Here the sketch relates the specific cases of number of young people who had been cared for in the Nelson home.)

"Mrs. Nelson united with the Memorial Lutheran church Nov. 7, 1915, and was from that time on an active and faithful member of that church.

"She leaves a wide circle of friends who will mourn her passing and who extend their sympathy to the children who today are parting with a kind and loving mother."

Immediately following the service at the church, members of the family, including a large number of the relatives who had gathered her from a distance for the funeral, drove to Atlantic, where the body was laid to rest by the side of her husband, Albert J. Nelson, who died April 12, 1917.

Among the relatives and friends here for the funeral, in addition to the daughter, Mrs. Genevieve Vasko and husband of Battle Creek, Mich., the sons Melvin of Lime Springs and Alvin and wife of near Fernald, were Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Thiele, Adair; Mr. and Mrs. George Thiele, Bridgewater; Mr. and Mrs. Ricegard, Exira; Mrs. Marcuson, Audubon; Mr. and Mrs. Andy Thiele, Audobon; Mr. and Mrs. Mervin Thiele, Creston; Mrs. Rudolph Miller, Fontanelle; Mr. and Mrs. Nels Thiele, Wall Lake and Mrs. Rose Muschick, State Center.
