Funeral Services for Lawrence Malliet Held at Zearing

Zearing, Nov. 8 -- The church was filled beyond capacity at the funeral services which were held for Laurence Malliet, Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Gabriel's Mission in Zearing, with Rev. C. C. Drummy officiating.

The overflow were seated in cars parked in front of the church and were able to hear the service by means of an amplifier from the Evangelical church which was installed.

The music was given by the church choir and the beautiful flowers were cared for by Mrs. Jesse Erickson, Ella Mary Jennett and Miss Verda Carmody. The ushers at the church were James Roche and Fred Varnum. The honorary pallbearers were co-workers at the Cownie Fur Company in Des Moines, where the deceased was employed, and other close friends.

The acting pallbearers were Doyle Tett, Paul Wheelock, Harlow McBride, Jesse Erickson, Sam Dakins and Ralph Culbertson, all former classmates at Zearing school. Burial was made in the Zearing cemetery.

Laurence Malliet was born on July 6, 1915, at Zearing, Ia., and passed away Oct. 28, 1940, when he was fatally injured in an automobile accident near Zearing.

Rev. Fr. Fagan from the Catholic church at Marshalltown, who was en route to Gilbert, administered the last sacrament, Laurence being a life member of the Zearing Catholic church.

He was a graduate of Lincoln township consolidated school with the class of 1933 of which he was president. He was an honor student and took an active part in the high school plays, public speaking and writing, and contributed a number of editorials in one of the leading newspapers of the state. He also participated in community activities in an unassuming manner.

After his graduation from high school he attend Iowa State college at Ames, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in industrial economics. During his four years of college he was active in campus life, being a life member of Memorial Union, having received a medal for selling the most pledges. He was member of Psi Chi fraternity, an honorary psychology fraternity, and president of the Beta Ward. He was also executive secretary of the ward system and received a medal from this organization.

Following his graduation from Iowa State college, he accepted a position as salesman for the Cownie Fur Company in Des Moines, holding this position at the time of his death. He was a member of the Des Moines Junior Chamber of Commerce.

He was a lover of poetry, "Crossing the Bar" being his favorite selection.

He is survived by his parents, Charles and Ida Malliet; on brother, Leonard and one sister, Margaret; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Nagle.

Malliet and son Merl of Cambridge; Catherine Jennet, Gerald and Ella Mary of Maxwell; Anna Brock of Jefferson; Mr and Mrs. Allen Guthrie of Ames; Della and Daisy Guthrie of Nevada; Carl Wheelock of Algona; Paul Wheelock of Marshalltown; Alice Guthrie and Mrs. Ralph Butler of McCallsburg.

Schulte, Bernard Larson, Sever and Paul Tesdall, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Pfaff, Mrs. Roy C. Lindeman; Beulah Emmerson, Neva Shearer and many others of Des Moines.
