Funeral Services Held Here Saturday for Elmer E. Nokes

Funeral rites for Elmer E. Nokes, 79, of 1733 Sixth street, who died at his home here Thursday after a lingering illness, were held Saturday afternoon at the Lilly Funeral home with Rev. Theodore Yackel of the Evangelical church in charge.

The services were attended by a large concourse of relatives and old neighbors and friends.

The floral offerings were many and beautiful, testifying to one of his outstanding characteristics, his love of the beautiful in nature.

The following life sketch of the deceased was read during the service by the pastor:

Elmer Ellsworth Nokes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Nokes, was born Aug. 22, 1861 in Franklin county in the state of New York. He was but a few years old when his father died, leaving the mother a widow who shortly afterward came to Nevada, Iowa with her children. The mother did not keep the family together very long, for she too passed away soon after coming to Nevada. After the death of her mother, he was cared for in the home of an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. George Hall, who lived in Nevada where he grew up to young manhood and then was married to establish his own home.

On Feb. 15, 1885, Elmer Ellsworth Nokes was united in marriage to Nettie Pointer, of near Nevada. This was truly a happy marriage, living happily together over half a century "until death did part them."

With the exception of his early childhood days, Elmer Ellsworth Nokes, lived his entire life in the vicinity of Nevada, Iowa. He was a very fine gardener, which was his vocation. He was a field foreman for the Blackman Brothers Gardeners for many years. He took great pride in his home, his garden and his flowers. He was a lover of the beautiful in nature. His hobby was watch repairing, in which he became very skilled.

He was known as a good neighbor, a friend to all who knew him. His congenial disposition won for him many warm friends. He was a devoted husband, a kind and considerate father. He was a gentleman, both in the home and out of it.

He suffered poor health for a long time, and for the last six weeks was confined to his bed. He was a patient sufferer, always hopeful for a day when he would be up and about again. He was faithfully cared for through these many days of suffering and sickness by his loyal and devoted companion and wife.

On Oct. 17, 1940 at 11:30 a. m. he passed away at his home at 1733 6th St., Nevada, Iowa, having reached the age of 79 years, 1 month and 25 days.

Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his passing, a daughter, Mrs. Eva Tetwiler, Adrian, Ore.; two sons, Frank Nokes of Lake Crystal, Minn., and Ray Nokes of San Diego, Cal., eighteen grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.
