Funeral Services For Mrs. R. Viland Monday

Slater, March 30--Funeral services for Mrs. Randy Viland, 91, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 2 o'clock. The services were in charge of Rev. P. E. Onstad, assisted by Rev. Peder Buland of Cambridge. There were beautiful floral offerings and a number of gifts to Missions in memory of Mrs. Viland, given by relatives and friends.

The hymn, "Abide With Me" was sung by the audience. Rev. Onstad sand a solo, "I Know of a Sleep in Jesus Name." A duet "The Lord Is My Shepherd" was sung by Mrs. M. S. Heggen and Mrs. A. L. Peterson.

The pall-bearers were Ole Nernes and Leslie Lande aof Kelley, Weir Weeks of Huxley, Morton Nernes, Oscar Fritz and Ingval Estrem. Burial was made in the Bethlehem cemetery.

Mrs. Randy Nernes was born in Etne, Norway, April 29, 1856 and died March 16, 1948, at the home of her niece, Mrs. George Kelley in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 91 years, 10 months and 19 days. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and grew to womanhood in Norway. She came to Iowa from Norway in the early eighties. She was married to Viar Viland of Slater on October 16th, 1886, the officiating pastor being Rev. Skyberg of Calamus, Iowa. They made their home in Slater and 50 years later celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in the same house in which they had been married and where they had spent all the years of their married life. Mrs. Viland died in 1938.

About two years ago Mrs. Viland went to Los Angeles to make her home with her niece, Mrs. George Kelley. She enjoyed her stay there and came back to Slater last fall for a visit. About two months ago she returned to California and her health began to fail until March 18th.

Memorial services were held at the Edwards Brothers Mortuary on March 19th at 12:30 p. m. The services were in charge of William J. Carlson of Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Los Angeles, after which, the remains were brought to the Riis Funeral Home in Slater, where a prayer service was held before the ----- service at the Bethelehem church.

Mrs. Viland was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she had worshipped for many years. She was an active member of the Ladies Aid and had made a gift of $30 before leaving for California. She was a kind and thoughtful friend and neighbor and very fond of children.

She is survived by one step-son, Amos Viland of Veblen, S. D., one brother, Carl Nernes of Omaha, Nebr., six grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Among those from a distance in attendance at the services were Amos Viland of Veblen, S. D., Edward Viland of St. Paul, Minn., Stanley Lundy, of Los Angeles, California, Carl Nernes and son, Arthur Nernes, of Omaha, Neb., Mr. and Mrs. Charles Reinertson of Des Moines, Mrs. Gordon Hennick of Cambridge, Mrs. L. H. Larson and Mrs. Sarah Munson of Des Moines, Supt. and Mrs. E. M. Eliasson of Houston, Minn. and Miss Glendora Dueland of Luverne, Minn.
