Funeral Services for Mrs. Maude Applegate
Hundreds of friends from Nevada, Maxwell, Cambridge and other parts of Story county, gathered at the Methodist church in Nevada, Wednesday afternoon to pay a final tribute of respect to Mrs. Maude Applegate, former story county woman, who had died at the home of a sister, Mrs. Fannie Lash, at Santa Ana, Calif., October 15.
The services were in charge of Dr. R. M. Shipman, former pastor of the Nevada Methodist church of which denomination she had been a member since girlhood.
A mixed quartette consisting of Mrs. Garnet Hathaway, Mrs. Inez Lough, H. G. Kruwell and J. Neal Clemmer, sang two songs and pall bearers were Gene Griffith and Charles Hennick of Cambridge, Forrest Scott, Bernice Scott and Ray Howell of Maxwell and Freeman Christy of Nevada.
Interment was in the Nevada cemetery, by the side of her husband M. M. Applegate, who died in California a few years ago and was brought back here for interment.
The following obituary of the deceased was read by the minister:
"Clara Maude Bailey, youngest daughter of Betsy and Henry Bailey, was born June 20, 1862, on the old homestead 1 1/2 miles south of Nevada, and passed away at the home of her sister, Mrs. Lash, in Santa Ana, Calif., Oct. 15, 1930.
"She was married to Marshall Morris Applegate Aug. 26, 1885, and to this union four children were born: Mrs. Fern Elliott of Waukee, Iowa; Arthur of Cambridge; Robert of Whittier, Calif.; and Mrs. Lulu Christy of near Maxwell.
"Most of her early married life was spent in Perry and in 1896 the family moved to a farm near Maxwell where they lived until 1915, when they retired to Nevada. Owing to Mr. Applegate's failing health they moved to Santa Ana, Calif., in 1919.
"Since the death of her husband, she has made her home with Mrs. Lash. Mrs. Applegate has been a member of the Methodist church since girlhood and at the time of her death, her membership was with the Santa Ana church. She was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge of Nevada.
"Besides her four children, she is survived by twelve grand children, and two great grand children, two sisters, Mrs. Dinsmore and Mrs. Fanny Lash, both of Santa Ana.
"Mrs. Applegate was a woman much beloved by her relatives and friend, and because of her quiet, genial way, sweet disposition and her keen sense of humor, she was loved by every one who knew her. Even her grand nieces and nephews and the members of the younger generation cherish her memory."
Among those from a distance who were here to attend the funeral was the niece Gladys Hartung, who accompanied the body back from Santa Ana; Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Fannie Fields and son Ralph Fields of Perry, Mrs. George Podmore of Dana and Bert Elliott of Ames.
