Funeral Services for Mattias O. Dahl

Slater, March 4--Funeral services for Mattias O. Dahl were held Friday afternoon at one thirty at the home and two o'clock at the Bethlehem church. The services were in charge of his pastor, Rev. E. R. Rorem, assisted by Rev. Peder Buland of Cambridge.

The many beautiful floral offerings were in charge of Mrs. Lester Nelson and Mrs. Lester Halverson. The Ladies Aid of the church presented a sum of money to the missions in his memory. A male quartette composed of Andrew Maland, Olaf Austin, Dewey Fausch and Homer Lewis sang "Near to Thee" and "Rock of Ages." Mrs. M. S. Heggen and Mrs. A. L. Peterson sang a favorite Norwegian song of Mr. Dahl's, "Luk Ham Ind."

Six of his grandsons served as pall bearers. They were, Robert Dahl, Harlan Carlson, Marvin and Donald Dahl and Gerald Caarlson of Ames, and Lawrence Queensland of Rolfe. Burial was made n the Bethlehem cemetery.

Mattias O. Dahl was born August 27th, 1857 in Haugesund, Norway and died at his home in Slater, February 24, 1935 at the age of 77 years, 5 months and 25 days. He came to America on July 2, 1881. His marriage to Helen Serene Queensland* took place in February 1889. They made their home in Rolfe, where they lived until Mar. 1, 1900, when they moved to a farm near Slater. In 1918 they moved from the farm to Slater. Eight children were born to this union. His wife died in 1908. His second marriage took place January 31, 1912 to Miss Bertha Maland of Eagle Grove. Mr. Dahl was an active member of the Lutheran church. He was a kind and loving husband and father.

He had a large circle of friends who will miss him. He is survived by his wife and eight children as follows: Andrew and Hjelmar Dahl, Mrs. Harold Carlson and Mrs. Grove Foster of Ames, Mrs. Clarence Fronsdal of Omaha, Mrs. Conrad Ramberg of Flint, Michigan, Mrs. Lloyd Swanson of Boxholm, Joseph of Los Angeles, Oscar Dahl of Slater and a step son, Ed Queensland of Rolfe, also a sister Mrs. H. Thompson of Eagle Grove.

Among those from out of town in attendance at the funeral services were the following: Charley Carlson and three daughters; Agnes, Annie and Jennie and Nels Christianson of Des Moines, Mrs. H. Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Ole Johnson of Eagle Grove; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mickelson of Humboldt; Mr. and Mrs. Christ Mickelson and Mrs. H. H. Knutson of Thor; Mr and Mrs. Gust Ness of Story City; Ed Queensland, Elaine and Lawrence of Rolfe, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Swanson, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Adams, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Frederickson, Mr and Mrs. Charles Stark, Mr. and Mrs. John Swanson, Mrs. Mattie Frederickson, Mr. and Mrs. N. E. Julander and Mr. and Mrs. I. E. Erickson, Mrs. Tina Foster, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Carlson and children, Mr. and Mrs Hjelmar Dahl and children, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Dahl and children of Ames and Mrs. Conrad Ramberg of Flint, Michigan.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: "Mathias O. Dahle" married Hellen E. Walker Kvindesland on 26 February 1890 in Sheldahl, Story County, Iowa. Hellen listed her parents as Erick Walker and Lorena Pederson. This submitter assumes this was a second marriage for Helen and that Kvindesland was Americanized to Queensland.
