MRS. OLE HEGLAND PASSES AWAY

Pioneer Lady of Story County Passed Away Last Friday. Has Been of Ill Health For Some Time. Funeral Held Sunday.

Karie A. Hegland died at her home in this city last Thursday evening July 24th. She had been afflicted with a lingering illness for several months and during the last eight weeks of her affliction she was confined to her bed. The cold finger of death touched her brow and the soul, that had abided in the flesh for sixty three years, three months and twenty-five days, took its flight to the other side of the Great Divide. The funeral services were held at Bergens church last Sunday afternoon, where a large gathering of relatives and friends had assembled to pay their last respects to the departed one. Rev. G. Smedal officiated. She was buried in the Roland cemetery.

Karie A. Hegland was born in Kvindhered, Norway, March 29, 1850. The happy days of her childhood were spent in the land of her fathers. In the spring of year 1861, she together with her parents boarded a sailing vessel bound for the "Land of the Free" reaching the American shore several weeks later. They continued their journey westward to Story County, where they decided to cast their fortunes with the comrades who had already journeyed hither from the fatherland. On the 7th day of march 1868 she was united in marriage to Ole Hegland. They took up their abode on a farm two miles east of Roland, where they continued to make their residence until five years ago when the moved to our city to enjoy a well merited rest.

The church of which she was a devoted member has lost an ardent and tireless worker. The community has lost a valued and esteemed member. But the loss to the immediate family circle is unfathomable. The sorrows of separation would be well nigh unbearable if it were not for the bridging of the chasm of despair by the hope of reunion. In the words of John Bunyan as he describes Christian and Hopeful coming to the gates of the Celestial City: "Now, I saw in my dream that these two went in at the gate, and lo! as they entered, they were transfigured; and they had raiment put on, that shines like gold. Then I heard in my dream that all the bells in the city ring for joy, and it was unto them, 'Enter ye unto the joy of your Lord,' and after that they shut the gates, which, when I had seen, I wished myself among them. They go from strength to strength, from joy to joy forever."

So this life has passed into the joy of her Lord, and the memory of her life must prove a perpetual inspiration.

She leaves a husband, one daughter and three sons to mourn her death. They are: Mrs. Ole Highland, Torneilus, Iver and Ben Hegland. Also one sister Mrs. Carrie Sandvold and two brothers, I. A. Iverson and Oliver Iverson besides other relatives and friends.
