Handsaker Funeral Held at Home In Fernald Saturday
Funeral rites for Mrs. Mary Handsaker, 78, who died at her home in Fernald Wednesday evening, were held Saturday afternoon at the home in Fernald after which burial took place in the Nevada cemetery by the side of late husband J. H. Handsaker, who died October 7, 1935.
The service was in charge of Rev. C. V. Pence of Nevada and the music was by Mrs. Mildred Cook and Mrs. Irene Handsaker. The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Myrtle Tudor and Mrs. Lulu New.
Pallbearers were Ralph Handsaker, William Handsaker, James Day, Harold Handsaker, Earl Handsaker and Lee Cook.
The following obituary of the deceased was read by the minister during the service:
"Mary Maria Cook was born three miles east of Nevada, December 24, 1870, a daughter of James W. and Sarah E. Cook. She lived her entire life in Story county, the last 40 of which were spent in the immediate vicinity of Fernald. She was united in marriage with Joshua Harvey Handsaker on January 18, 1893 Her husband preceded her in death on October 7, 1935.
"Mrs. Handsaker is one of a by her two sons: James Guy of Nevada and William Lee of Lincoln, Nebraska. Three grandchildren are Mildred Dadisman, Helen Thomas and Ronald Handsaker and the two great grandchildren are Donald Dadisman and Laurel Jane Thomas.
"Mrs. Handsaker is one of family of nine children, four of whom preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her passing three brothers John and James of Nevada, Fred of Glenville, Minn., and one sister, Ann Fraley, Charbonneau, North Dakota. These with a host of other relatives and a large circle of friends mourn her passing.
"Mrs. Handsaker with her husband united with St. Paul's Lutheran church in Fernald about the year 1910 and this was her church home until her death when she joined the church triumphant.
"Mrs. Handsaker was a home-loving woman, who took great pleasure in caring for beautiful flowers and plants. It is generally known that she was in very poor health for a number of years. However her last illness was of short duration due to complications that developed Sunday. She passed away on Wednesday evening July 19, 1939, at 7 o'clock in her home in Fernald.
"During the last fourteen months of her life, Mrs. Handsaker was patiently cared for by Miss Daisy Guthrie and her mother. This has been greatly appreciated by the immediate family."
