Final Rites for B. L. Mead Held In Collins Friday

Collins, April 5--Funeral services for the late B. L. Mead were held at the Methodist church in Collins Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. Paul McDade of Ogden, Iowa, a former pastor and personal friend of the family, in charge, assisted by the Rev. Duane Manning of the local church, who read the 14th chapter of Job and the 23rd Psalm.

A mixed quartette composed of Mrs. L. M. Hall, Mrs. L. D. Holland, Milton Hale and E. S. Stuntz with Miss Calla Wood at the piano sang, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Sweet Hour of Prayer."

The flowers were in charge of Mrs. Rose Franklin and Mrs. Oscar Serbein.

Pallbearers were C. R. Stone, G. F. Holland, Wm. Carver, Dewey Kern, L. W. Van Dran and H. C. Denniston. Honorary pallbearers were J. R. Witmer, W. A. Kitchell and Carl Day, all longtime friends of the family.

Interment was in Collins Evergreen Cemetery.

The following obituary was read at the services.

Burton Leroy Mead was born in Collins on January 14, 1882, and passed away at this home in Vero Beach, Florida, Sunday morning, March 25, after a brief illness. Three weeks ago he was taken to Riverside hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, where doctors pronounced hi condition as serious. On their advice he was removed to his home in Vero Beach were he passed away peacefully and without pain. Death was attributed to heart exhaustion.

Roy was the son of the late Charles and Phoebe Mead and grew to manhood in this community. He graduated from Collins High School in 1900 and attended the Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines. Before assuming the management of his farm here he was employed for four years as assistant cashier of the Exchange State Bank. He also acted as manager of the Armour Grain Company in Collins for three years.

When a young man he united with the Methodist Protestant church and was a faithful member until the church closed. He then united with the Methodist church where he still held his membership.

Active in community life he served for a number of years as a member of the local school board, the city council, the Masonic Lodge and the Farm Bureau. For several years he served as secretary and treasurer of the Iowa State Sunday School Association. His interest was always with young people, both here and in Vero Beach.

Three years ago he moved to Vero Beach , Florida, to make his home and during that time he was employed at the Del Mar hotel.

When first arriving in Vero Beach, he volunteered to participate in the Airplane Warning Service, contributing more than a thousand hours for which he received United States Army's Certificate of Merit.

In 1903 he was united in marriage to Miss Hattie E. Middleton of Modale, Iowa, who survives him. To this union were born two children, a son Leroy William of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and a daughter, Elena Kathryn of Vero Beach, Florida. Other survivors are one sister, Mrs. Minnie Hanson of Nevada, one brother, Charles Fletcher Mead of Collins, and two granddaughters, Sharon Elena and Sylvia Kay.

He was a truly king and loving husband, an understanding father and loved and respected by a host of friends.

Due to ill health Mrs. Mead and Elena were unable to accompany the body to Collins for burial. The sympathy of the community goes out to them in their bereavement.
