COLE, MATILDA HAY (MRS. ALONZO CYRUS) (1856 – 1929)

THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, May 2, 1929, page 1.

"FUNERAL OF MRS. COLE - Funeral services for Mrs. Matilda Cole were held at the Church of Christ Wednesday afternoon, April 24, in charge of Rev. DeLoss Marken, former pastor here, assisted by the local pastor, Rev. Hugh C. Guy. Burial was made in the Maxwell cemetery in the family lot by the side of her husband, who preceded her in death nine years ago. Matilda Hay was born near Berlin, Somerset county, Penn., July 17, 1856, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Arthur Pryor, at Atlantic, Iowa, April 20, 1929, following a short illness, at the age of 72 years, nine months and three days. She came with her parents to Jasper county, Iowa, at the age of six months, and on Christmas Day, 1873, she was united in marriage to Alonzo Cyrus Cole, near Mingo. Nine children came to bless this union, of whom two daughter, Mary and Bertha, died in infancy. The surviving children are three sons, John W., of Clear Lake; Harve W., of Perry; George G., of Maxwell; four daughters, Mrs. E. V. Sturgeon, of Santa Monica, Calif.; Mrs. Arthur Pryor, of Atlantic, Iowa; Mrs. Wm. Willison, of Blane, Wash., and Mrs. Howard Liggett, of Virden, Ill., all of whom were present at the funeral. Mrs. Cole is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, one sister, Mr. E. H. Baldwin, of Farrar, and two brothers, Conrad and Irvin Hay, of Mingo. Mrs. Cole was a charter member of the local Church of Christ, of which she was a loyal and devoted member. She lived a busy and useful life and died as she had lived, honored and loved by everyone. Her life here was completed, if well done and all done constitutes completion. Relatives attending the funeral from out-of-town, besides the immediate family, were: Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Baldwin and daughter, Jeanetta, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Wert and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Baldwin, of Farrar; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hay, of Mingo; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stouffer and Mrs. Robert Dawson, of Colfax, and Mrs. C. N. Smith, of Madison, Ill. CARD OF THANKS - We are deeply indebted to all the kind friends whose sympathy and services were so kindly tendered following the death of our mother, the late Mrs. Matilda Cole, and to each we wish to extend our grateful appreciation. We also want to thank those who sent flowers and we assure all that your expressions of sympathy were greatly appreciated."
