THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, February 15, 1940, page 1, column 2. "THOMAS SHANNON BYERS - Thomas Shannon Byers, son of Thomas and Mary Byers, was born near Mechanicsville, Cedar County, Iowa, on June 11, 1865, and departed this life on February 8, 1940, at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 27 days, after a short illness. In 1892 he and his brother, R. S. Byers, moved to Maxwell, where he has continued to reside for the past 48 years, making many friends who sincerely mourn his passing. He was united in marriage to Ada June Oxley** on Nov. 23, 1893, who passed away Dec. 23, 1924. To this union was born two daughters, Vera Robertson and Eva at home, and one son, Paul, who died in infancy. He was survived by his two daughters, Vera Robertson and Eva Byers; a son-in-law, Earl C. Robertson; three grandchildren, Forrest, Verle and Marvin Robertson; one brother, R. S. Byers, of Pasadena, Calif.; one brother-in-law, H. N. Burroughs, besides many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Rose, Mrs. H. N. Burroughs, Mrs. Anna Davidson and Jessie, and one brother J. W. Byers. For many years he has been a member of the Presbyterian church, of Maxwell, and for seventeen years he served efficiently as township trustee. Services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Presbyterian Church with the Rev. C. R. Neel in charge. The male quartet, consisting of Ross and Claire Olinger and Clark and Dale John, sang, "The Old Rugged Cross," "In the Garden" and "Under His Wing," accompanied by Mrs. H. C. Larsen at the piano. The pallbearers were: Burl, Charles, Harvey and Floyd Bell, J. W. Oxley, Jr. and Fred Kulow. Interment in the Peoria cemetery. Out-of-town relatives and friends were: J. W. Oxley, Sr., of Cogswell, N. D.; Mrs. S. J. Spurlin, of Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Lovig, of Waterloo; Mrs. G. A. Kulow and son, Fred, and Mrs. Maxwell Smith, of Ames; Mrs. Grace Wescott, Mrs. Fanny Lund, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Parr and son, Harold, John W. Oxley, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Jim Richards, Mrs. M. C. Robertson, all of Des Moines; Miss Beulah Hatcher and Miss Rules, of Grinnell; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Jackson, of Rhodes; Mr. and Mrs. Burl Bell, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Bell and Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Bell, of Mingo and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Bell, of Newton."
