Funeral Services For Chas. Ray Held Monday

Maxwell, Sept. 7--Funeral services for Charles Ray, 70, of Maxwell, who passed away early Saturday morning at his home one mile north of Maxwell rather unexpectedly, were held Monday afternoon in the Maxwell church of Christ with his pastor, the Reverend Hugh Guy, of Nevada officiating, assisted by his pastor, the Rev. Stanley Mahannah. The Phillips Community club quartt, Clark John, Jimmie Beal, Dale John and Dorus Myers, sang "Nearer, Still Nearer," and "Have Thine Own Way, Lord." Mrs. Harold Mohler, soloist sang "At the end of a Perfect Day, with Mrs. Ned A. Pearson, accompanist, at the organ.

Floral tributes of love and esteem were most beautiful and profuse, were cared for by Mrs. Wayne Cleverley and Ms. Florence Carpenter. Casket bearers were L. A. White, Wayne Cleverley, Emmett Scott, Ray Robertson, C. I. Kirk and E. L. Wood. The deceased was well-known in this section of the county, where he had lived so many years and was an honest and esteemed citizen.

Coughenour, and M. Matison and Esther Matison, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Weeks; from Conrad, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ray, for Dougherty, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Cook; from Colo, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hopkins; from Des Moines, Mr. and Mr. Frank Ray and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Wakefield; from Ira, Mr. and Mrs. Zenas Jones, Mr. and Mrs. John Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jones; from Cambridge, Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Scott; from Chicago, Ill, Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Schreiber and probably others.

Obituary

The following obituary was read at the funeral service:

"Charles Ray, son of Archibald and Hilda Ray, was born ec 21, 1875 on a farm north of Maxwell, and passed away Aug 31, 1946, on the same farm where he had spent all but five years of his life.

"On Oct 24, 1899 he was married to Maude Edna Keefe, who died Dec. 19. 1906. To this union was born one daughter, Viola May, now Mrs. Howard A. Tomlinson of Cedar Rapids.

"On Nov. 28, 1907, he married Cora Alice Woten who survives the deceased. To this union were born three children, Gracie Edna, now Mrs. Wesley Ketcham of Rochester, Minn.; Charles Archie of Maxwell; and Eva Loletta, now Mrs. Richard Schulz of Cambridge.

"He was one of three remaining charter members of the Maxwell Church of Christ, holding the position of deacon at the time of his death.

"Preceding him in death were his father and mother, two brothers, Andrew and Artie, and one sister, Eva, who died in infancy.

"Besides his wife and children, one sister survives, Mrs. S. H. Coughenour of Nevada, as well as five grandchildren, two nieces and a nephew, numerous other relatives and a host of friends."
