JOSEPH DUEA IS LAID TO REST

Funeral Held Last Friday, Attended By An Immense Crowd, Who Came To Pay Their Last Respect to A Departed Friend.

It is with much sadness and deep regret that we are called upon this week to chronicalize the death of on of our communities most hustling and progressive citizens.

Joseph Duea was born December 28, 1861 on the old Duea homestead just west of town; and died August 6, 1912, thus being 50 years, 8 months and 8 days at the time of his death. He was a son of Jonas and Martha Duea, pioneer settlers of Story County. When a young man he attended several schools, receiving most of his education at the Burlington Business College and Red Wing Seminary at Red Wing, Minn.

On April 14, 1883, he was married at Roland, Iowa, to Miss Malinda Jondall and to them thirteen children were born, all of them living, Mr. Duea's death being the first one in that large and happy family. The children are Anna Mae, Jonas, Homer, Cora, Mrs. F. L. Tallman, of Jewell, Myrtle, Fae, Victor, Irene, Joseph, Rosabel, Benjamin and Vergil and they with their mother are now left to mourn the death of a kind and loving husband and father.

In his infancy Mr. Duea was baptized into the Norwegian Lutheran church and remained a member of the same until his death. In his church work, as in his other work he was always active, and took a leading part in the Sunday School, Luther League and all church extension work, as long as his health permitted, as he was a very fluent speaker, he was always called upon for his opinion.

After his marriage he worked for his father in the Hardware business for three years, but decided to farm, so moved to a farm three miles northeast of town, now occupied by M. N. Nerem. Later he bot a farm of his own and after several years sold it to T. S. Erickson, and again moved to Roland and engaged in the Hotel and Butcher business until 1895 when he accepted a position with the Iowa Live Stock Commission Company and traveled for them for ten years. In 1904 he went in the general merchandise business with the firm Grove, Jacobson & Duea and continued there until 1906. In 1907 he moved to a farm four miles north of town, and together with his son, Homer, farmed a large tract of land and was still living on this place at the time of his death. It is six years since they moved to that place.

Mr. Duea has always been interested in live stock, and has for years been the popular stock buyer and shipper of this community. He was also a breeder of fancy Short Horn cattle and has one of the finest herds that can be found in this state, this occupation took him around the country a great deal, and wherever he had once been he was always remembered, his congenial spirit always winning him many and warm friends, and he will be greatly missed in that circle as well as all other places.

Mr. Duea has always been hale and hearty until about 5 years ago when creeping paralysis set in, and gradually kept failing until death claimed him. He died happy in the thot that he was to go meet his Saviour, and with a prayer on his lips for all of his friends to meet him there. Thus is ended the career of a man that will long be remembered in this community.

Besides his immediate family he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Chris Logan, of near here and Miss Mary, who is on a pleasure trip to Norway, Europe, and Unable to reach here for the funeral and three brothers, Rev. Edward Duea, of Blue Earth, Minn., Oscar Duea, of Terrill and Rasmus Duea of this place.

The funeral was held last Friday from the Salem Lutheran church and was attended by the largest crowd that has ever at any time attended a funeral at Roland, going to show that is friends are numbered by his acquaintances. The funeral sermon was preached by his pastor, Rev. Sandven and Revs. Duea and Paulsrude payed tribute to loved and respected brother and friends. The choir and quartet sang some fitting songs. The floral offerings were many and very beautiful. Interment took place in the Roland Cemetery.

The sorrowing ones are extend the sympathy of the entire community.
