Mrs. W. S. Smith Laid to Rest Friday Afternoon

Last rites for Mrs. W. S. Smith, 86, long time resident of Nevada, who passed away at her home 1127 Seventh street, at 5 a. m. Wednesday morning, were held from the Memorial Lutheran church Friday afternoon at 2:30 with the Rev. Ernest P. Windman officiating.

Leslie Henderson was at the organ. He played Chopin's "Prelude in C Minor," "Cast Thy Burden on the Lord" by Bach, "Prayer" (Beethoven) and "Nearer My God to Thee."

The may beautiful floral pieces were cared for by Mrs. Alta Karges and Mrs. Rose Stratton. Their beauty was symbolical of the long, useful Christian life of the deceased.

The pall bearers were grandsons of the deceased: Donald Nelson of Iowa City, Richard Nelson, Nevada, Willard Smith, Sioux City, Charles Meachum, Des Moines, Clifford Houser of Warrens, Wis. and Clifford Padellford of Nevada.

The following brief life story was read by Rev. Windman, who also paid fine tribute to the one in whose memory all were gathered.

OBITUARY

Laura Hattie Huckell was born June 23, 1860, to Joseph E. and Elizabeth Robert Huckell in Black Hawk County, Iowa.

When she was nine years old her family moved to Cawker City, Kansas. There she was educated and taught school for a brief period before her marriage to Winfield Scott Smith of Story County, Iowa, on March 3, 1877.

Two years later she and her husband with their first born child, Lester, came to Story County, Iowa, where she continuously resided until her death March 7, 1947. Four more children were born here, Harry, Lillian, Edna and Vivian. Lester died in 1914, her husband, W. S. Smith, died in 1917, and the second son, Harry, died in 1934.

The daughters, Lillian, Mrs. John Sherk, lives in Warrens, Wis., Edna, Mrs. F. W. Nelson, and Vivian, Mrs. K. B. Cessna, both live in Nevada, Ia.

Mrs. Smith was second in a family of eleven children. All members of this family preceded her in death except one brother, B. B. Huckell, of Riverside, California.

Besides her three daughters and her brother Mrs. Smith leaves nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Mrs. Smith was a long time member of the Evangelical Lutheran church and, as long as her strength permitted, was active in furthering its program of service.

She was also a member of the Social Hour club, whose members she counted among her dearest friends.

Among those from out of town in attendance at the last rites were Mr. and Mrs. John Sherk and Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Houser of Warrens, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Willard Smith of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Meachum and children of Des Moines, Mrs. Mabel Sherk Tesdall of Huxley, and Mrs. W. C. McDonald of Ames.

Two grandsons were unable to be present, Lloyd Sherk of Chicago and Bob Nelson of Nevada who was ill and unable to act as pallbearer.
