Last Rites for Cora McKim Brown Held at Whiting

The following obituary of Cora McKim Brown, native daughter of Story County, was read at the last rites held Wednesday afternoon in Whiting.

"Cora A. McKim was born November 10, 1870 at Nevada, Iowa the first of two daughters of Lafayette and Mary Logan McKim. She was preceded in death by her younger sister, Jessie McKim Allen, and by her husband, Wm. G. Brown.

"After completing her public school education she graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1893. She taught two years in the Whiting Public Schools from 1893 to 1895.

On June 26, 1895 she was united in marriage with William G. Brown at the home of parents in Nevada, Iowa. The young couple established their home in Whiting and remained there throughout their lives. Two sons were born to this union, Gaylor McKim Brown and Leslie Edwin Brown.

During the nearly 54 years of her residence in Whiting, Mrs. Brown assumed wide responsibilities in many community activities. Her major interest was, to the end of her life, the work of the Congregational Church. In the Sunday School she taught for many years and also served as superintendent. For a time she served as Church Clerk. The Ladies Aid received of her time and abilities, and even to the last the member looked to her for counsel and leadership. She took an active part in the newest organization of the Church, the Guild. Such are some of the high points of her untiring Christian devotion.

Through the Order of the Eastern Star, the American Legion Auxiliary, and a host of other organizations she gave freely of herself in the service of other people.

Her great devotion to her family extended to her nieces and nephews and their children living near Nevada, Iowa, with whom she spent many happy hours.

She died at her home in Whiting on Sunday morning, March 23, 1947. She is survived by her sons, Gaylor M. Brown of Whiting and Leslie E. Brown of Madison, Wisconsin, and their wives, Alice and Evangline, whose devotion to her during her life and during her last illness could not have been greater had they been her own daughter.

Her friends, who will rise up and call her "Blessed", are legion in number.

Pallbearers were J. N. Hopkins, Whiting Holmes, Robert Croker, Robert Rowe, Norman Whiting, Robert Huff, all of Whiting. The choir of the Congregational Church sang tow numbers "The Lord Is My Shepherd", and "Abide With Me," accompanied by Mrs. Ward Miner. A solo number "There Is A Land Mine Eye Hath Seen."

Relatives from Nevada attending the funeral were, Mr. and Mrs. Mac Allen, Mr. and Mrs. Phil Allen, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Vilomt and Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Nelson, Mrs. Hilda Allen of Onawa and Mr. and Mrs. George Allen of Eldora.

Friends from out-of-town who attended were Mrs. M. Myrton Skelley, Mrs. Mary Northup, Mrs. Myrtle Bowen, R. J. Laird, all of Des Moines, Mgr. E. J. Smith, Sioux City and Herman Kock of Sioux City, Paul Tourquiest, Davenport and Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Saggu of Denison."
