Funeral Services Held Saturday For William F. Bales

Colo, Jan. 21--Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, for William F Bales, at the Colo Methodist Church, with the Rev. Keith Orr officiating clergyman and the Rev. Alfred Schneck assisting. The Rev. R. L. Russell, as soloist sang, "Rock of Ages" and "Sunrise Tomorrow," being accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Gladys McIntosh. Masonic services were conducted at the church and cemetery in charge of Claude Smith of Ames.

The many beautiful floral arrangements were cared for by Mrs. Pauline Koch, Mrs. Mae Perry and Mrs. Lois Yeager.

Casket bearers were George Rae, Chester Dickinson, Ross White, William Snyder, Charles Yeager and William Donaldson.

Burial was in the Colo cemetery.

Mr. Bales had been in Failing health for some time, but was bedfast, only since Thanksgiving Day, during which time he was tenderly cared for by his family.

He was a man of high character possessed of a kind and friendly disposition, highly esteemed in this community of which he was a native and so long a member.

The following obituary was read during the service:

William Franklin Bales, the son of Andrew and Sarah Bales, was born in New Albany township, south of Colo, Iowa, on January 20, 1861, and departed this life on January 14, 1948, at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 25 days. With the exception of three years spent in Cedar Falls, Iowa, he has lived his entire life in the Colo community.

On June 28, 1896, he was united in marriage to Cora A. Morgan of Colo. On June 28, 1946, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. To this union six children were born. A son died in infancy. Those who remain to mourn his passing are: his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Bulkley of Pelham Manor, N. Y., Mrs. Mabel Armstrong of Rochester, Minn., and Mrs. Anne Kennedy of Bondurant, Iowa; two sons, Floyd W. of Nevada, Iowa, and James M. of Rochester, Minn., eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; one sister, Mrs. J. M. Thornton of Colo, Iowa; and one brother, George of Winnebago, Minn.; also a host of other relatives and friends.

In his long life in the Colo community, he served as clerk in the pioneer stores of Niland and Granger, and as post master of the local post office, also served on the Colo School Board for several years. For forty-six years he was an active member of the Masonic Lodge where he served in its various offices.

From out midst has gone a devoted husband, a loving and providing father, a loyal and faithful friend. Cherished memories of his long and fruitful life will be ours to keep and to hold as we face the tasks which come to us the living.

Out of town relative attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. George Bales and Lauren Bales of Winnebago, Mr. and Mrs. Oren Fairbanks, Mrs. Lloyd Schellenberg, Mrs. Rollo Miller of Huntley, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Carlisle Anderson of Rake, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Fairgrave and Russell Bales of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lundy, Mrs. Gordon Lundy of Zearing, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Morgan, of Boone, Mrs. Lawrence Morgan of Grand Junction, W. H. Morgan of Reasoner, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Benfer of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Swalwell of Gilbert, C. H. Sawtell and Mrs. Henry Bowers of Ames, Wm. Thompson of Nevada and close friends from Ankeny, Alleman, Marshalltown, Melbourne, Nevada and Ames.
