Funeral Services Held Tuesday For Mrs. Mary Alice Tripp

Colo, April 19 -- Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon April 13, in the Methodist Church in Colo at 2 o'clock for Mrs Mary Alice Tripp who passed away Sunday morning at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Smith of State Center. She had been quite ill during the week and had been taken there for a few days rest and care.

The very high regard in which the deceased was held evidenced by the many beautiful floral offering and the large attendance of those who were present to pay their last tribute of respect to one who had given generously of her time to those who were ill and afflicted also who had received many bouquets from her large flower garden for all occasions.

The Rev Alfred Schneck, pastor of the church, was in charge of the service being assisted by the Rev. R. L. Russell, pastor of the Evangelical U. B. Church.

Mrs. Lloyd Lounsberry and Mrs. Chester Myers sang two duets "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Will There be Any Stars in My Crown" and Rev. R. L. Russell used as a solo number, "He Careth For You". Mrs. Mark Wilson accompanied them at the piano.

The many beautiful floral offerings were arranged and cared for by Mrs. Mae Perry, Mrs. Nellie Weir, Mrs. Gertrude Greiner and Mrs. Lorene Wilson.

Casket bearers were Lester Smith, Charles Rhoades, Doyle Robinson, Walter Davis, Carl Davis and Arthur Davis. Interment was in the Colo cemetery.

Rev. Schneck read the following obituary during the service:

Mary Alice Tripp was born at Pembroke Shire, Wales, June 5, 1871 the youngest of a family of eleven children. At the age of three she came to the United States with her parents and all her oldest sister. The family settled in Big Rock, Ill., in April 1874.

She was united in marriage to Oscar Tripp on July 39, 1890. To this union were born four children: Lyle of Plano, Ill., Harry of Nevada, Mrs. Oscar Smith of State Center and Nellie who passed away in 1907.

Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Tripp lived in Ford County, Ill. for five years, moving back to Big Rock in 1896. Feb. 26, 1904 they came to Colo, Iowa where they lived continuously with the exception of one year spent in Miami, Florida in 1915.

Mrs. Tripp joined the Congregational Church of Big Rock, Ill. in 1884 and never transferred her membership to any other church. Raising and enjoying flowers was her hobby and she was always an active member of the Garden Club. Through her experience with flowers she became an authority among her Garden Club friends on all sorts of growing things. She has been a member of the Legion Auxiliary for many years.

After an illness of a few days she passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Oscar Smith, Sunday morning, April 11, 1948 at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 6 days. Her daughter Nellie, both of her parents, and all of her six sister and four brothers preceeded her in death. She is survived by her husband, two sons, one daughter, nine grand children, four great grand children and many relatives and friends.

Those attending the funeral services from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Jeter, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Tripp of Plano, Ill.; Mrs. Earl Dauberman and daughter of Kaneville, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Francis Mall, Mr. Louis Klotz of Sandwich, Ill., Arthur and Mrs. Harry Hoepner, Aurora; Mr. and Mrs. Ben Davis from Big Rock, and Mrs. Elmer Tripp, Charles City; Mr. and Mrs. Donald Zimmer, Rockford, Mrs. Grace Zimmer and Miss Hazel Tripp of Colwell.
