Funeral Services Held Sunday For John Alva Gearhart

COLO--Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 15, at 1 p.m. in the Colo Methodist church for John Alva Gearhart, who passed away Friday morning at his home in Colo after a lingering illness.

The services were in charge of Rev. Paul Williams of Stanhope, assisted by Rev. Alfred Schneck of the local Methodist church. Music was provided by Mrs. Alice Marsh who used "My Task" and "Beyond the Sunset". She was accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Mark Wilson. Casket bearers were Ross White, Donald White, Glenn White, Arthur Fish, Merle Dickinson and Harold Gearhart. The many beautiful floral offerings were cared for by Mrs. Jessie Brouhard, Mrs. Beeula Perry and Mrs. Frances Templeman.

Burial was in the Colo cemetery.

Following is the obituary read at the service.

John Alva Gearhard, son of Conrad and Sarah Francis Gerhart, was born on a farm south of Colo, August 22, 1872, and passed from this life at his home in Colo, August 13, 1948, at the age 75 years, 11 month and 22 days.

He grew to manhood and for forty years, lived on the same farm where he was born.

On October 6th, 1897 he was united in marriage to Hattie A. White. In the spring of 1912 they retired and moved to their new home in Colo, where she departed this life in February, 1944.

After her passing he remained in the home where he spent a very lonely life and his health failed gradually until the end.

He was a member of the Masonic lodge in Colo.

He leaves to mourn his passing, one sister, Ollie Dickinson of Colo, one brother, Harley of Collins, seventeen nieces and nephews, a large number of grand nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. The brothers being Douglas and William, the sisters, Mrs. Flora Fish, Mrs. Rose Smith and Eva, who died in infancy.

Those attending from a distance were Mrs. Bertha Sims, Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Schloosber, Mr. and Mrs. Franc Illingsworth and family of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Lane and family, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Gearhart and family, and Mrs. Edna Gearhart of Newton, Mr. and Mrs. Glen White of Davenport, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Sealine of Stanhope, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gearhart of Washington, D. C., Mr. and Mrs. Paul Banks, Mrs. Sam White, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Terry and Mr. Carr of Nevada, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Fish, Mr. and Mrs. Harland Witmer, Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Richardson, and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Brown of Maxwell.
