Richard Leon Hall Laid to Rest in Memorial Gardens

Memorial Lutheran church was filled both upstairs and down on Thursday, September 16 at 2 p.m. with sorrowing relatives and friends in attendance at the funeral of Richard Leon Hall, of Nevada, who was injured fatally in a traffic accident near Council Bluffs and passed away, September 12.

Rev. E. P. Windman was in charge of the service with the Story County Post 2209, Veterans of Foreign Wars of which the deceased was a member, presenting their burial service at the graveside.

The entire front of the church was banked with beautiful flowers, mutely suggestive of the passing of the man in the flower of his youth. Those in charge of the flowers were Mrs. Lloyd Jensen, Mrs. Dean Robertson, Mrs. Ben Ackerman and Mrs. Leslie Knudson.

The flag covered casket had an color guard made up of Dick McKim, and Howard Beal and Clark Stookey and Bob Eller.

Dick Selby sang "Just As I Am" and "Face to Face", Leslie Henderson was at the organ.

Active pallbearers included Marvin L. Sorenson, Ralph Jensen, Don Rasmusson, Marion Heintz, Dean Robertson, Elmer Huff, Reed Vetters and Elmer Lindquist.

In Memorial Gardens

Burial was in the Memorial gardens cemetery south of Ames. Bernard Severeid, commander and Lee Alexander, chaplain were in charge of the impressive V.F.W. burial service. The V.F.W. firing squad, made up of Gary Wells, Arlo Fink, Bob Eller, Adolph Kleinschmidt, Roy Rosenberg, Elwood French, Henry Larson with Clark Stookey in charge, gave the salute, followed by taps by Bill Tipton.

A color guard made up of Ben Severeid and Dick and Bob McKim had accompanied the remains when taken from the Funeral Home to the Hall home the afternoon preceding the funeral and remained during the evening.

Obituary

The following obituary was read by Rev. Windman during the service in the church:

"Richard Leon Hall was born January 17, 1928, at Cambridge, Iowa and passed away September 12, 1948 near Council Bluffs, Iowa.

He entered school at Shipley Consolidated in 1933 and graduated from this same school in May, 1946. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard January 17, 1946 previous to his graduation. He was discharged June 4, 1947. Since his discharge from service he has been engaged in farming with his father and also trucking.

On the 17th of May, 1948, he enrolled in Boyles college at Omaha, Nebraska. He had three weeks of study left before graduation at the time of his death.

He leaves to mourn his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Hall, and his two sisters, Barbara and Regina, at home. His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bennett of Leon; Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hall of Nevada, a number of relatives, neighbors and friends. He was loved by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

Richard was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion.

Among those from a distance in attendance at the last rites were Mrs. Amos Hand and daughter Marjorie of Worland, Wyo., Mr. and Mrs. Bill Mitchell of Lincoln, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. Virl Blackburn, Mrs. Anna Thornton and Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Haun of Jefferson; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hartman and daughter, Maxine, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tucker, Otto Tucker, Lloyd and Melvin Tucker and Mrs. Maude Harless of Grand Junction.

Mr. and Mrs C. P. Bennett of Decatur, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Bennett of Weldon, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Johnson of Osceola, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Bennett of Roland, Reed Vetters and Elmer Hoff, students at Boyles college, Omaha, Neb.

Other here were Mr. and Mrs. "Jeff" Spooner and Ronnie of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Glasgow and Mrs. George Setzer, Ernest Wood, Mrs. Horne Wood, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Dunahoo, Mrs. and Mrs. George Moore, Mr. and Mrs. Arlie Wolf of Maxwell and Collins, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Weeks of Colo, Mr. and Mrs. Scott Bennett and granddaughter and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Bennett of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. Loyd Ritgers of Payton, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Allen and family and possibly others of Ames. Nevada relatives included Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hall, Mr and Mrs. Irvin Williams and family and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hall.
