Hold Final Services For Oscar Barkley

Funeral services for Oscar H. Barkley of McCallsburg were held at St. Gabriel's church in Zearing on Thursday, May 16, with the Rev. Father Joseph Murphy officiating. Burial was in the Zearing Catholic cemetery.

Obituary

Oscar H. Barkley, son of James A. and Mary E. Barkley, was born March 10, 1887, at Lexington, Va., and passed away in the Eldora Memorial hospital on Sunday, May 15. Although in ill health for a year and a half, his condition was on considered serious until the last nine days. He died of heart trouble and hypo-toxic pneumonia.

He was united in marriage to Nora J. Johnson on Dec. 14, 1922. The children were born to this union, one dying at birth and Van Walton, who lives to mourn the passing of his loving father. Nora, the wife, lived only a few days after the birth of the little daughter.

Oscar, or "Barber" Barkley, as he was commonly called, moved to McCallsburg in 1930 and operated a barber shop until Oct. 1947, when the doctor advised him to close the shop because of his heart condition.

Twelve years before this on Aug. 14, 1934, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Frances Bannon.

August 12, 1940, he joined the Catholic church. He was a very faithful member ever since, deriving great comfort and happiness in his religion.

Survivors

In addition to his son, Van, and daughter-in-law, Darleen, he leaves to mourn his death, his wife, two little grandchildren, Vickie Dawn and Steven Barkley, his step daughter, Harriet, one brother, Harry T. Barkley of Roanoke, Va. and three sisters, Lola B. Harris, Lelia G. McCoy and Zella K. Moran, all of Lexington, Virginia.

Oscar had jolly disposition and was a kind and loving husband and father. He will be greatly missed in his home and community.
