John W. Smith fo Ames, Ia., passed quietly and peacefully to his rest Tuesday morning, April 22, 1902, at 10:20 o'clock. He was born in Morrow Co., Ohio, Nov. 18, 1828. He was married to Miss May Jane Cochran, Feb. 26, 1852?. In November, 1856, they emigrated to Indiana, where two children were born, John C. and Rosie L. In January, 1865, he removed to Iowa, and in September, 1877, to Nebraska, where he remained for two years. There he helped organize the Rappahoe Christian Church. He returned to Iwoa in 1882, locating at McCallsburg. From there he came in 1895 to Ames, where he has since remained. He father was a Methodist minister and he united with that church at the age of seveteen. In 1870, when 42 years of age, he united with the Christian church in which he was a faithful and consistnet worker up the the time of the decoa??.

He was the father of seven children, two of whom preceded him to their reward, Etta L. died April 22, 1873, and Ross (or Rosa) L., died Jan. 10 (or 16), 1891. The surviving children are Mary. M Sowers, Irwin and John C. Smith, Mrs. S. E. Vernon, and Lillie Belle Ricketts. He and his faithful companion, Mary Jane Smtih, traveled life's highway together as husband and wife for over 50 years, they having celebrated their golden wedding last February. He has 21 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren all living but 8 from the ranks of the latter. He died at the good old age of 73 years, 5 months and 1 days. He was an esteemed citizen, a good neighbor, a pioneer in Christian work, and had a host of friends. The funeral was conducted by F. D. Ferral at the Christian church this forenoon at 10 o'clock. Interment at 11 o'clock in the Ames cemetery.
