THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, April 28, 1898, page _, column 3. "OBITUARY - BENTLEY - Died at his home in Maxwell, Iowa, April 21, 1898, John P. Bentley, in the 79th year of his age. Mr. Bentley was born in the state of Pennsylvania in the year 1819. In 1840 he was married to Margaret McMichael. In 1858 they came to Iowa and settled in this community and here they have continued to live. Twelve children were born to them only three of whom are now living; viz., Mrs. S. B. John and Mrs. Yeaton, of this place, and Mrs. Henry Olinger, of Perry, and all were present at the funeral. Mr. Bentley was a hardworking, industrious man, a good obliging neighbor, upright in all his dealings with his fellow-men, peaceable and quiet in the neighborhood. After he had his wife became to old to work on their farm they moved into Maxwell and lived very quietly in their own home, enjoying the esteem and good will of all their neighbors, and tenderly cared for by their son-in-law and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Yeaton, with the assistance which the other children and good neighbors could render. Mr. Bentley had been in poor health for some time, but only a few knew that he was worse than usual. Death came about 11 o'clock Sabbath night and he quietly fell asleep. The funeral was held in the C. P. church on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. The music was furnished by the C. P. choir with Mrs. F. W. Hill at the organ. The sermon was preached by Rev. Ferguson and prayer was offered by Rev. Doty. The pallbearers were W. M. Starr, G. W. Boitnott, J. R. Wood, R. R. Thompson, W. G. Dickey and John Hall. The interment was in the Maxwell cemetery. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved, but especially for the aged companion, who herself is in very poor health. All hope that she may improve as the warmer weather comes on." "CARD OF THANKS. - Mrs. John P. Bentley and children ask that their neighbors and friends will accept their sincere thanks for the kindness and sympathy extended to them in their late bereavement in the sickness and death of the husband and father in the home."
