THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, July 1, 1971, page 1, column 2. "DR. J. M. ATTERBERRY. - Dr. James M. Atterberry passed away Saturday, June 26th, 1971, at Denver, Colorado. Services will be held at the Cooper Funeral Home in Maxwell, at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, July 1, 1971, with Rev. Dale Ellsworth officiating and burial in the Maxwell Cemetery. James M. Atterberry was born April 17, 1891 to George and Nancy Skelton Atterberry, in Noble, Ill. He graduated from the Chicago Veterinary College in 1913. He enlisted in the Army in 1917 and was assigned to Headquarters company of the 91st Division at Fort Lewis, Washington. He was later transferred overseas serving in both France and Belgium, being discharged from service in 1919. He was married to Gladys Price of Indianola, Iowa, on Sept. 10th, 1912 at Mt. Carmel, Ill. They were privileged to spend their 50th wedding anniversary at their home in Maxwell, where they had resided since 1935. He is survived by his wife, Gladys and four daughters, Mrs. Frances Szatkowski of Wausaukee, Wisc., Mrs. Katherine Kendall of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Huldah Moore of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Betty Riggs of Danville, Calif.; also eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Dr. Atterberry became a Mason at Sidney, Ill., at the Sidney Lodge No. 347, AF & AM, on Oct. 22, 1917 and was honored at Maxwell, Iowa, in Herald Lodge No. 455, on Jan. 14th, 1968 as a fifty year Mason. He was also a member of the Commandrie and the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine of Des Moines, Iowa. He was a Vice President and Director of the Maxwell State Bank for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion and the VFW of Maxwell, the Elks Lodge of Ames and attended the Maxwell Methodist church."
