Sudden Death of Respected Resident

Christ S. Haaland passed away at his home in the southeast part of town Tuesday evening after an illness of only a couple hours. The news of his death came as a shock to his many friends, as he has been in better health this spring that for some time past. Funeral services will be held from Bergen church Friday afternoon at two o'clock.

CHRIST HAALAND FUNERAL FRIDAY

Funeral of Christ Haaland Held at Bergen Lutheran Church Last Friday Afternoon. Rev. Andersen Preached Funeral Sermon.

The remains of Christ S. Haaland were laid to rest last Friday in the Roland cemetery after services had been held at the home and at Bergen Lutheran church. Rev. J. N. Andersen of Story City preached the funeral sermon in the absence of the pastor, Rev. M. O. Sumstad, who has been in Minneapolis attending the conventino of the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America. The church was filled with friends who came to pay their last respects to a departed friend, and the floral offerings were many and beautiful, thus testifying the high regard in which the deceased was held.

Christ S. Haaland was born on the Haaland farm adjoining Roland on the east on October 12, 1865, and died Tuesday, June 13, 1922, and was 56 years and 8 months old at his death. Mr. Haaland lived on the farm until twenty-five years ago, when he moved with his mother into Roland, where he has since made his home. His father died many years ago, and since moving to Roland, he took care of his mother during her declining years until her death a year ago last March. His sister, Mrs. Malinda Nereim, has at times been with them in their home,and during the last months of their mother's days on this earth, assisted in her care, and has made her home with her brother since. During the past few years, Mr. Haaland was quite poorly, being confined to his home much of the time, but the last weeks before his death, he seemed to be much better and was able to be out considerably. On the day of his death, he had been assisting his sister with some work and was out in the yard in the afternoon, when he was taken with convulsions. Dr. Snyder was hurriedly called, but nothing could be done to save his life and he passed away about four o'clock the same afternoon.

He leaves to mourn his death, his sister, Mrs. Malinda Nereim, and several nieces and nephews, besides hosts of friends, because to know him was to be his friend. The writer has had ample opportunity to know him intimately for a number f years, and we can testify to his great unselfishness and kindness and we feel that his demise will be a personal loss to us as it is to many others.
