When he was a lad of 4 years the parents came out to Iowa and located on what became known as the Gilmore homestead in Milford township. There the parents passed away and there the son lived until after the death of his first wife in 1897. Leaving the farm he moved into Nevada and this has been his home since.
He was first married to Miss Jerusha Norton, daughter of a pioneer Zearing family, in 1869. Eleven children were born to this union, eight of whom survive. Two died in infancy and youngest daughter, Ella, died in Nevada at the age of 12 years.
