Sudden Death of Emma Boyd

Another shocking accident is news flashed to relatives telling of death of Miss Emma Boyd in Florida.

For the second time within less than a week, this community has received the shocking news that another one of its citizens has been killed. Last Friday evening a message was received from Tallahassee, Florida, bearing the sad news of the accidental death of Miss Emma Boyd that afternoon.

From information received, it is learned that Miss Boyd together with two other young ladies had gone to an Indian Mound to prospect for relics and to make a study of the mound. They had secured the help of two negroes with teams to excavate a trench along the side of the mound. They had dug down about 6 feet when the ladies decided to enter the trench and begin their study, when without any warning, the wall of dirt fell over them. Boyd was in the center and was completely covered over, but the others were only partly covered and one of them succeeded in getting out and securing help from people who happened to pass by. When the body of Miss Boyd was found life was extinct.

The body was brought to Story City Tuesday evening and was accompanied by a Mr. Kellum, Financial Secretary of the State College for Women at Tallahassee, and who has given as complete a report of the accident as it was possible to secure.

Miss Boyd was a daughter of Mrs. K. P. Boyd , and was born and reared on the old Boyd Homestead southwest of Roland. After completing her Elementary education, she took special training invoice, and since completing her work has been teaching vocal music at different places, the past three years of which he has been at the head of the local department at the State College for Women at Tallahassee. Last Summer she spent several weeks in Cuba and had planned to spend the coming summer at Paris.

Miss Boyd was born September 30, 1887, and was 34 years, five months and 17 days old at the time of her premature calling away. Besides her mother, she leaves five sisters, Mrs S. J. Michaelson, Roland; S. L. Hammersland, Forest City; Mrs E. H. Harnden, Coquille, Oregon; Mrs. Albert Eggland, Roland; Miss Kate Boyd, teaching at Emmetsburg; four brothers, Arthur, Boyd, Zearing; Alfred Boyd, Story City; Henry S. Boyd, living on the old homestead and Meyer S. Boyd, who left last week for an indefinite stay in the West.

The funeral services are being held this afternoon in Immanuel church at Story City, after which internment will be in the Roland Cemetery by the side of her father, who passed away a few years ago.

Many Attend Funeral of Miss Emma Boyd last Thursday

The funeral of Miss Emma Boyd, who was accidentally killed in a cave-in of an Indian mound at Tallahassee twelve days ago, was held at Immanuel church of Story City last Thursday afternoon, where her pastor, Rev. T. T. Heimarck spoke words of comfort to the bereaved family and friends assembled to pay their last respects to a loved one. Mr. Kellum, financial secretary of the Florida State College for Women, and who accompanied the corpse here, spoke a few words in which he very touchingly told of her success attained at the school and the high regard in which she was held by all who had learned to know her. Miss Boyd had made her home with Mr. Kellum and wife and they had learned to love her as a sister.

A profusion of beautiful sprays, wreaths, crosses and other floral offerings was a token of the love and esteem in which the departed was held. The church was filled to its capacity with friends of the family and many were unable to gain entrance. The remains were laid to rest in the Roland cemetery, where her father, Mr. K. P. Boyd, was buried several years ago.
