Obituary of O. T. Hanson

Ole T. Hanson was born in Etna, Norway, November 8, 1847, and died on Monday, August 9, being 73 years of age at the time of his death.

Mr. Hanson emigrated to this country at the age of eighteen years. His first occupation was that of a farmer, but soon left that field of endeavor to enter the merchandise business, first working for Evenson, Duea & Thompson, the first merchants in Roland.

On December 13, 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Ida Erickson. A short time later they moved to Story City where Mr. Hanson and Mr. Helvig conducted a mercantile business under the name of Larson, Helvig & Hanson.

Mr. Hanson remained in Story City until 1902 when with his family he moved to the Erickson homestead north of town. Here he lived until March, 1914, when he moved to Roland.

He leaves to mourn his death, his wife and eight children, Mrs. Severie Parker, Henry Hanson, Elmer and Otto Hanson, Mrs. Adolph Eggland, Mrs. Henry Hoversten, Irene and Lillian Hanson, one sister, Mrs. E. N. Eggland and a brother, Lars Hanson, both of Story City.

Mr. Hanson was a man of generous impulses and never forgot the hospitable ways of the pioneer. His home was always open to friend and stranger alike. To know him was to esteem him. His daily life was a true example of his noble Christian character.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 11, from Bergen church. Interment took place in the Story City Cemetery.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Jacob Tesdall, Hans Tesdall of Morris, Ill., Oliver Tesdall of Joliet, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. O. K. Helvig, Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Eggland, Miss Severie Torkelson, Hans Torkelson, Tom Torkelson of Story City, O. Ostrem of Jewell, Mrs. Severin Odeland and Mrs. Anna Knudson of Badger.
