OBITUARY

CHAS. E. ARMSTRONG

Word comes from Nebraska of the death of Chas. E. Armstrong who was many years ago in the implement business at Nevada, but who was a relative, even though the name is similar, of the present news editor of the Journal. Mr. Armstrong was well and favorably known in this community. He was quite a tall man and he built the house at Walnut street and 3rd avenue north which is now the home of Wm. Crawford. He was the first to locate an implement business in the old skating rink on what is now the library lot. He removed to Lincoln, Nebraska, nearly twenty-five years ago and never came back; but his eldest daughter returned here on a visit, met and married L. B DeMange and was a resident here for quite a number of years afterwards.

Mr. Armstrong died in Alabama, where he had presumably gone for his health, as his wife was out in Oregon at the time of his death. His body was brought back to Lincoln and Mrs. Armstrong was returning there for the funeral which must have been held sometime last week. He was twice married having by his first wife two sons and two daughters, both of the sons now being dead. He married his second wife at Lincoln, and they had one son and one daughter. His age must have been somewhere in the latter 60's.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Charles Edward Armstrong married (1) Emma Whipple on 10 August 1875 in Linn County, Iowa. They has four children: Arthur Rex Armstrong, Winifred May Armstrong, Dolliver Armstrong, and Isabel Effie Armstrong. He married (2) Emma E. Witte (her maiden name was Witte and her first husband was John H. Witte) on 29 April 1897 in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska. They had one known child: Samuel Gaines Armstrong. Emma (Witte) Armstrong had a daughter, Pearl Witte who later went by Pearl Armstrong, by her previous marriage which I believe the writer of this obit is attributing to her marriage with Charles Armstrong.
