Jesse R. Meekins Native Illinois Grove Died In Hospital
Special to the Journal.
Zearing, Dec. 10--The death of Jesse R. Meekins, 69, at the university hospital, Iowa City, on Wednesday, removes a well known figure in Marshall county politics and a native son of the Illinois Grove neighborhood, northeast of here across the line in Marshall county.Funeral services will probably be held at Marshalltown and burial at Albion.
Mr. Meekins had lived at Radcliffe for the past two years, where he had conducted a blacksmith shop.
Nine times a candidate for sheriff in Marshall county, he was successful in election to two terms, served two years as chief of police of Marshalltown and also as night police at State Center.
For more than 25 years, except for the time he served as sheriff and chief of police, Mr. Meekins operated a blacksmith shop at Liscomb. He was justice of the peace at Liscomb for a number of years, served on the town council and was active in the affairs of the Liscomb Christian church, Odd Fellows, Woodmen and Yeoman's lodges.
Jesse R. Meekins was born in the Illinois Grove neighborhood. He grew up there and as young man moved Liscomb where he took up the blacksmithing trade.
He is survived by his widow and two daughters, Mrs. Early Elliott of Albion and Mrs. Dell Roberts of Cozad, Neb., both of whom were called to the hospital last Friday when their father's condition became critical.
