Funeral Services Held For Anna Johanna Hougen

STORY CITY: Funeral services were held Feb. 6, 1957 at 10 a. m. at the Sunset Home Chapel, Story City, for Anna Johanna Housen. Rev. T. J. Alvestad officiated. Mrs. Gudrid Naae accompanied Mrs. Alma Furman and Mr. Mabel Omvig who sang "Beyond the Sunset." Pastor Alvestad used Ephesians 2:4-10 as his text and Rev. Ivar Havneros, pastor of the home, brought a message from Job 30:23.

Graveside services were held at the Lutheran Cemetery, Norway, Iowa. Due to the weather, services were brief. A few words were spoken by Pastor Alvestad on Chronicles II 29:27 and Revelations 5:9. Pastor Virgil C. Hougen, a nephew of the deceased, also brought a short message from Hebrews 4:9 and Matthew 11:28-30.

Serving as pall bearers were her nephews Ernest Houben, Herbert Paulson, Joel Hougen, Maurice Hougen, Jeffrey Hougen, Kermit Hougen and Byron Hougen.

At the close of the service at the cemetery, Pastor Jordan Jacobson, on behalf of the Ladies Aid, invited everyone to Trinity Lutheran church parlors for refreshments.

Obituary

Anna Johanna Hougen daughter of Jens J. and Christen Olson Hougen, was born May 30 1862 in Clinton county, Ia. There she was baptized Aug. 31, 1862 by Rev. Nils Amlund at Our Saviour's Evangelical Lutheran church near Calamus. With her parents, she moved to a farm in Benton County, Ia. in 1864 where she spent her childhood.

She was confirmed in the Benton County Lutheran church north of Norway by Rev. Jacob Frost on Aug. 12, 1877.

In September 1880 at the age of 18 years, she went to make her home in Cumberland, Maryland, with an aunt and uncle Mary John Wilson, in order to be an companion and helper to her aunt. Ten years later (1890) they moved to Chattanooga, Tenn., where she cared for her uncle and aunt and her aunt's brother, James Knight until their deaths. In order to be closer to her brothers and sister she came to Story City in 1943 and entered the Sunset Home. In 1952 she broke her hip and since that time has been confined to a her room, bed and wheelchair.

She is survived by a sister, Martha Hougen of the Sunset Home, two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Julius Hougen of Ames and Mrs. John Hougen of Story City, 33 nieces and nephews, 85 grand-nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
