JOHN W. SOUTHERN
John W. Southern was born in Clear Creek township, Jasper county, Ia., on Dec. 29th 1874. He spent most of his life on the farm until 1908 when he began the restaurant business in Collins.
He was the son of David and Melissa Southern who were among the earliest arrivals in Jasper county and was the eldest of seven children.
He was united in marriage to Ida Oswalt also of Clear Creek township on March 9th 1898. To them were born two children, Leroy and Edward Harold. He passed to his rest of Feb. 3, 1915 after ans extended and painful illness at the age of forty years, one month and five days.
He died believing in Christ and having confessed His name.
Besides his wife, two sons, father and mother he leaves one brother, Harvey E., now postmaster of Collins and five sisters viz Mrs. Eva Tilton, Mrs. Bertha Ozmun, Mrs. Jessie Atwood, Mary Southern and Mrs. Lena Confelt.
The funeral service was held at the Christian church on Sunday afternoon, the pastor Albert V. Hart officiating. The sermon was based on the words of Isa. 25:8. The Mystic Workers marched to the church and also had charge of the service at the grave. Knowing he was nearing the end, Mr. Southern selected the pall bearers who were his old school mates, he being the first to pass away from the boys who attended school together.
