Funeral Services Held Thursday for Elder D. W. Wise

Funeral services for the late D. W. Wise, 62, Fernald man who died very suddenly at his home there early Monday evening, were held Thursday at 1:00 p. m., at the Church of the Brethren in Fernald, where he had labored so zealously for the past 20 years.

The funeral was largely attended in spite of the severe weather and blockaded conditions of the roads. The services were conducted by Elder C. B. Rowe of Dallas Center, assisted by Elders D. D. Flrishman and Morris Eichenberg, also of Dallas Center. The funeral text was taken from Job 14:14, "If a man die, shall he live again."

Interment was in the Johnson Grove cemetery, northeast of Fernald.

The following obituary of Elder Wise was read at the funeral service:

"D. W. Wise, the fifth child of Andrew and Susan Shank Wise was born in Franklin county, Penn., April 17, 1874 and died at Fernald, Iowa, Feb. 3, 1936, age 61 years, 9 months and 16 days.

"From Pennsylvanie he came with his parents to Carrol county, Ill., when one year of age, thence to Dallas county, Iowa nine years later.

"On Feb. 10, 1895 he was united in marriage to Flora S. Stech. To them were born three sons, Charley S., of Beaver, Ia., Harry A., of Newton, Ia., and Jacob A. of Nevada, Ia., also two daughters, Mrs. Irene E. Dadisman, who is moving soon to Maxwell and Mrs. Flora W. Post of Nevada. In February 1912 he moved with his family to Beaver, Iowa where his wife died.

"In November 1916 he was married to Mrs. Adeline Fogelsanger. After her death he was married to Mrs. Eva Dumbauld on Oct. 3, 1926.

"He is survived by his wife, five children, eight grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. Besides these there are two brothers and two sisters, John, Jacob and Mrs. Bertha Royer of Dallas Center and Mrs. Martha Royer of Adel, Iowa.

"His passing was very sudden having been sick for only ten or fifteen minutes, his loving wife being the only one present. Apparently his suffering was not great and was very brief, he simply fell asleep.

"He united with the Church of the Brethren at the age of 14 years, was called to the ministry when 33 years of age and later ordained to the eldership or full ministry.

"The sudden death of Elder Wise records the passing of a man of prominence in the community and church. For a number of year he has served almost continuously, with ability and in a way that has merited credit, in positions of trust in the community.

"Being a carpenter and plumber by trade his labors have been in demand as a contractor and builder and nearly always had all he could do in this line of work since he retired from the farm several years ago.

"Being a fully ordained minister of the Gospel he served the church in this capacity with rare ability and untiring zeal, free and without charge or pay. He also always contributed, materially or financially, as much as any other member of his church, to the finances of the church.

"It is suggested, by people of prominence in the community that are not members of his church, that his passing occasioned the greatest shock to the Fernald community experienced in its history. He will be greatly missed."

Relatives from a distance present at the services were J. S. Wise, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Wise and daughter Iona, Mr. and Mrs. John Wise from Dallas Center, Mrs. Martha Royer and son D. L. Royer of Adel, Mrs. Berthat Maust, Carleton, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. Joe Albright, Grundy Center, Mr. and Mrs. John Lehman, Jewell. Besides a number of friends and old neighbors from Dallas Center, Maxwell, Beaver, Ames and Marshalltown.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Daniel Witmer Wise married three times: (1) Flora Sabine Stech on 10 February 1895, (2) Adeline Louisa (Beard) Fogelsonger (widow of Elmer Newton Fogelsonger) on 10 November 1916 in Greene County, Iowa, and (3) Eva Mable (Fry) Dumbauld (widow of George Franklin Dumbauld) on 3 October 1926 in Guthrie County, Iowa.
