Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Sigrun Nervig passed away October 10, 2019 at The Madrid Home in Madrid, Iowa. Her family will receive friends at her visitation on Thursday October 17th from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at the Slater United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday October 18th at the Slater United Methodist Church with burial to follow at the Slater Cemetery.

Sigrun was born on March 24, 1932, in Fister, Norway, to Anders Øverhus and Ingrid (Austarå) Øverhus. Sigrun, a lovely young blonde Norwegian girl, swept Clark Nervig off his feet while he was touring the country after being stationed in Salzburg, Austria during the Korean War. They were later united in marriage, and moved back to the states making Slater, Iowa their lifelong home. Sigrun and Clark were blessed with three children - Anders, Brian, and Ann Marie who are all residents of Slater. The two spent 61 wonderful years together as husband and wife. Sigrun was a homemaker who loved to take care of Clark and their children and grandchildren. To many, Sigrun was a Jane of all trades. She was a florist, a seamstress, an artist, an accountant, a chef, a green thumb, a babysitter, and everything in between.

Her children’s favorite memories of her are their vacations to Norway, Minnesota, and California. In Norway, they would climb mountains, swim in the fjords, and enjoy time with their family. Taking the boat from the Stavanger into Fister was a family favorite, as Sigrun could recall everything from her childhood along the way. A favorite story is of a time that she and her girlfriends wandered out onto the ice, a piece broke free, and they floated out to be stranded the middle of a fjord. Luckily, a fisherman came to her rescue and she became the woman we all know and love.

Sigrun relished in contributing to her community. She was a member of many Ballard community clubs, most notably the garden and birthday clubs. She welcomed many ladies of the community to her dining room table frequently to enjoy coffee and a Norwegian treat. With her grandchildren, Sigrun was willing to do just about anything, and they loved her for it – including watch the Lion King four times in one sitting with Natasha, let Spencer sit on the counter to make cookies, have dance shows in the living room with Abby, and have formal tea parties with Annika.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons: Anders Nervig and Brian Nervig; daughter: Ann Marie (Don) Catus; her grandchildren: Natasha, Abby, Spencer, and Annika, all of Slater, and her sister: Ragna (Ole) Molaug of Bryne, Norway.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
