Final Rites Held Sunday at Maxwell for David Garis

Special to the Journal.
Maxwell, Aug. 24--Funeral rites for David E. Garis were held Sunday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Cooper, where Rev. Judson T. Perkins read scripture, gave prayer and read the following obituary.

David E. Garis, son of Joseph and Susan Garis, was born at Hebron, Indiana on Feb. 3, 1853 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Guy Cooper in Maxwell on August 19, 1938, aged 85 years, 6 months and 16 days.

Mr. Garis spent his boyhood in Indiana and came to Iowa as a young man with his parents. They settled near Rhodes. On July 3, 1877 he was united in marriage to Caroline Hughes at Rhodes. They lived in the vicinity of Rhodes and State Center until 1894 when the family moved to Maxwell. Two daughters came to bless their home, both are living. His wife died in 1934.

Surviving are his two daughters, Mrs. Grace Flickinger and Mrs. Guy Cooper, both of Maxwell and one grandson, Fred Flickinger of Cincinnati, Ohio The funeral services were held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Cooper on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 3:00 p. m., the Rev. Judson T. Perkins pastor of the Methodist church officiating. Burial was made in the Maxwell cemetery.

Mr. Garis was among the older residents of Maxwell having lived here over a period of over 45 years. He had retired from active work about 15 years ago. He was in the feed and produce and grocery store business for number of years.

Pall bearers were Chas. B. French, George Cole, B. M. Kirkman, A. F. Heinrich, Will Gamble of Maxwell and C. E. Fish of Collins. Relatives and friends from out of town attending the services were his grandson Fred Flickinger of Cincinnati, O., Mr. and Mrs. Edward Spencer and Mrs. Bessie Laughlin of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Hildreth and Mrs. Harold Hildreth of Rhodes, Mr. and Mrs. Hillman of Zearing, Mr. and Mrs. John Cole of Clear Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Flickinger, Mrs. Sadie Sowers and Mrs. Roy Frazier of Ames, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Garlock of Washington, D. C.
