Funeral Services for Martin Helland

Special to the Journal.
McCallsburg, Dec. 8--Funeral services for the late Martin Helland, 78, took place Sunday, Dec. 5 at Bethany Lutheran church. There was brief devotional period at the home at 1:30. The funeral proper was at the church at 2:00, in charge of his pastor, Rev. H. N. Bakke. Mesdames B. A. Imsland and Roy Skartvedt sang two duets with Mrs. John Helland at the piano. The flower offerings were beautiful and there were a number of gifts of money for missions.

Pallbearers were Arne Sandvick, B. A. Imsland, John Mahle, J. M. Olson, Warren Bushman and Otis Twedt. The remains were interred in the Warren township cemetery.

Martin E. Helland, son of Erick and Christina Helland was born near Stavenger, Norway, Nov. 13, 1859, and departed this life Thursday morning, Dec. 2, 1937, at the age of 78 years and 19 days. He was a sailor for about 10 years, being first mate. He came to America and settled on a farm in La Salle county, Illinois, where he lived five years. He then came to Iowa and settled on a farm west of McCallsburg. From there he moved to a from north of McCallsburg. In 1907 he moved to the farm 3 1/2 miles northeast of McCallsburg, where he remained the rest of his life.

On Oct. 3, 1899 he was married to Dorothea Bergland. To this union was born 10 children, eight of whom survive. They are Clara (Mrs. Lloyd Ellingson), McCallsburg; Millard Helland, McCallsburg; Bertha (Mrs. Otto Brue), Ames; Emma (Mrs. Alfred Mannes), McCallsburg, Jesse, Vera, Delmar and Milo at home. There are four grandchildren; one sister Ingeborg; brothers Ole and Lars in Norway, and Edward in Michigan, N. D. Two sons preceded him in death, Maurice and Edward.
