Funeral Rites for John Swarm

Special to the Journal.
Maxwell, Nov. 24--Funeral rites for John Swarm were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Methodist church with the pastor, the Rev. Judson T. Jerkins in charge. Mrs. Gerton Nelson was at the piano. A quartette, Harry Fackler, Mrs. Van Busenburg, Mrs. C. I. Kirk and Martin H. Troup, sang "Rock of Ages," "Face to Face" and "We Shall Meet Beyond the River." The flowers were very beautiful and were arranged and carried by Mrs. Joe Young and Mrs. Ernest Wood. The pallbearers sere his step-grandsons Harold and Irvin Parr, Guy Patton, Charles Bell, Harvey Bell and Gus Vlahous.

Burial was made in the Peoria cemetery.

During the services the pastor read the following obituary:

John Calvin Swarm, son of Daniel and Elizabeth Swarm, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, August 13, 1864 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Leonard Jacobson near Maxwell on November 20, 1939, aged 75 years, 3 months and 7 days. When he was about two years old, his parents moved from Indiana to Iowa and settled near Peoria. His childhood and young manhood was spent in that community.

On October 12, 1903, he was united in marriage at Peoria, to Lizzie Oxley Bell. After their marriage they made their home on farms in the Peoria and Maxwell communities.

In 1920 they moved into Maxwell where they lived until the death of his wife on April 24, 1939. He then went to live with his daughter, Mrs. Leonard Jacobson. In September of 1920 he with his wife and only daughter united with the Maxwell Methodist church in which church he held membership until death.

He was a loving husband, father and good neighbor and well thought of by all who knew him. Surviving are his only daughter (Mary) Mrs. Leonard Jacobson of near Maxwell; five stepchildren Mrs. J. E. Wescott, Mrs. Fannie Lund, Mrs. B. F. Parr of Des Moines, Burl Bell of Colfax and Floyd Bell of Newton; one brother Jacob Swarm of Indianapolis, Indiana; one half brother James Swarm of Maxwell, one grandchild, ten step grandchildren, many other relatives and a large number of friends.
