FUNERAL RITES SUNDAY AFTERNOON for MRS. ELLEN CORBIN (4-10-1944)

Funeral rites for Mrs. Ellen Corbin, 78, of 1329 Second Street, who passed away at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames Thursday, were held Sunday afternoon at the Re-organized Church of the Latter Day Saints, at 2 o'clock, with Elder Earl Shalley of Des Moines in charge.

Burial followed in the Nevada Cemetery by the side of her husband, Wilbur N. Corbin, who died many years ago leaving her with a family of sixteen children to care for.

Pallbearers were selected from among her grandsons, they being Lester Corbin, Richard Pierce, Glenn Corbin, Harry Corbin, Bob Corbin and Edward Corbin.

The funeral bier was banked with beautiful flowers. Mrs. Owen Mead was at the piano accompanying Mrs. Lloyd Shickell and Miss Evelyn Lehman who sang three numbers, "The Old Rugged Cross", "The Lord Knows Why", and "Rock of Ages".

Mary Ellen McKee Corbin was born in Fayette County, Illinois , March 19, 1866, to Mr. and Mrs. Hezikiah McKee, one of a family of five. She passed away April 6, 1944 at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, at the age of 78 years, heart trouble being the cause of her death.

At the age of three years she moved with her parents to Story County, Iowa where she spent the rest of her life, mostly in Nevada.

In May 1884, she was united in marriage to Wilbur N. Corbin. To this union sixteen children were born, six boys and ten girls, all but three living to mourn her death. Her husband preceded her in death, also a son Blaine, and two daughters, they being Mrs. Clara Pierce and Mable Tucker.

Those remaining are Mary Ringgenberg, Ella Wilkinson, Laura Corbin, Hazel Baldus and Lee, Harold and Hugh Corbin, all of Nevada, Lloyd and Orville of Ames; Bertha Davidson of Hillsboro, Ind.; Eva Baldus of Story City; Fay Baldus of Dexter, Minn.; and Lola Mattingly of Gilbert. Also, surviving are sixty-seven grandchildren and forty great-grandchildren. Besides a wide circle of warm friends.

All but two of the children were with her when she passed away. They arrived Thursday and were here for the service.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints, Sunday at 2 P.M. Earl Shalley of Des Moines officiating, assisted by Chas. Lehman of Colo.

Burial will be in the Nevada Cemetery by the side of her husband.

Mrs. Corbin's health has been poorly, but she was not bedfast until the day before her death. She was taken to the hospital Wednesday morning. At noon her condition became grave and the children were called to her bedside. She peacefully slept until time for her call to a higher life, which came at seven minutes past seven Thursday morning.

Grandma Corbin, as she was known by all her friends, will be greatly missed. The past year she has lived in an apartment up town and has enjoyed so much having her friends call on her. She was a woman of fine personality, kind and thoughtful to all, a loving mother, always ready to share the troubles of her children. She has had so much love and companionship, as she grew older, and always loved to have them around her. She has six grandsons in the service and two more to enter in May. Her heart was broken each time one left. One son-in-law, R. M. Wilkinson, is in the Aleutians doing construction work. Some of the grandchildren from the service were here for the funeral.
